'Gem' and 'turd' are the 2 extremes and both equally rare. Press on laddie you know its worth the effort and it'll be right by the time riding weather comes around again.

Thanks for the positive replies. Gives me hope.
What parts would you replace, doing a rebuild Dusty?
I have had quite a few strokers over the years, and been quite fortunate with not having to rebuild one.
Tell a lie. I had my ypvs engine rebuilt. And rebuilt a kh 400 engine myself.
So I'm going to have a go. So need a heads up on what will/should need replacing.
Tony

Hi If it was mine I would strip it down and split the cases. If the crank has been subject to sitting in water you may find a rebuild more expensive than an exchange crank. New crank seals- Yamaha, clean up pistons and rings and hopefully they are ok. If bores are ok, maybe a light hone. I change all gearbox bearings as a matter of course, but if you check them and are happy then that's ok. I included an engine rebuild thread in my Yamasaki project in the rebuild section, includes part numbers. I would only use genuine Yam gaskets and seals - lots still available from Norbo, Granby's and Fowlers. I always get my cases and barrels vapour blasted but that's personal choice depending on how original you want it. Also check your powervalves and seals as the seals are changed with the barrels apart. I am certainly no engine expert but have done a few now and they are easy to strip and rebuild with basic tools. You will need a clutch holding tool and a flywheel puller - either borrow from someone or buy from Norbo, and that's about it. The timing on a 1Ua engine is set so no timing to be done afterwards either. rdlccrazy.proboards.com/thread/14843/yamasaki-hybrid-long-term-buildHere is a link to my rebuild, there are lots of engine build threads on the forum though so it's worth checking them all out. Thanks Dusty. I'll have a read through that.
The crank is that badly corroded I can stand both the conrods vertical with the pistons still attatched and the don't move.

It looks like it hasn't run since being built, you may well find the top end OK, crank will need checking / rebuilding if its been waterlogged, but that top end looks fresh once the gunge is cleaned off. A few close up pictures of the top end. It actually does look like it's had a recent top end rebuild. Hopefully it wil clean up. What do you think ?

I think the little ends are knackered

Hi, I would be taking those barrels to a specialist to see if they can be saved. Not sure if a hone will be enough, especially for the worst affected barrel. I would imagine your gudgeon pins are fubar along with the little ends. The pistons can clean up pretty well with a fine sanding block you can get from Halfords; Obviously see if the barrels are saveable first though ! When I bought my 350lc, one pot was full of water and took ages to free the piston from the barrel. The bike had been outside for 3 years and the engine had really suffered; I would be checking every moving part in that engine for corrosion/wear, especially as it has suffered from the ingress of water. I don't know where you are based, but PJME in Wednesfield are very helpful, and will give you an honest opinion on the condition of your engine parts. Paul Vetere is the fella to speak to. Dusty

Botty, I've seen a lot worse than that so don't despair!
Crank rebuild, new bearings and gen gaskets, bit of cleaning up and she'll be good to go!
If the crank has been immersed in water then there will be corrosion on the crank pins, probably u/s but you won't know until it's stripped. New bearings and lab seal at least, probably more.
The bores might hone, it depends how deep the corrosion goes, the water shouldn't have affected the pistons but the rings might have corrosion, have a good look under an eye glass, any sign of pitting or damage then bin them.
Hopefully there isn't water in the gearbox, that plays havoc with the bearings and cogs.
I can have a look at all this for you if you need, we're based near Brands Hatch
It's not that bad though mate, it's all stuff I'd want to look at anyway when I build a bike

I'd say the crank will need replacing, might be cheaper to get a reconditioned one than pay to rebuild that one, as for the barrels the decent one may well come good with a hone, but the worse one is difficult to tell, the only thing you can do is box it all up and take it to a specialist, they'll tell you straight away whether anything is salvageable or not.

Fortunately Dusty. I live in Wolverhampton, and used PJME in the past.
I will be taking my barrels there, when I get home from work in time. They don't open Saturdays.
Actually I'm off work Friday, I can take them then.

hi, lucky you have them local to you. They know their Lc's, so you are going to the right place. Good luck, I hope they can salvage the bores for you. Dusty

Thanks Higgsy, Shytalk for the chin up comments. It does look bad, but like you say, it needs looking at anyway whether it's a worn big end bearing or what I have. It needs changing.
