Thanks for any advice given was really disappointed this week took the bike in to stink wheels /all speed exhaust for a second opinion about poor running they charged ยฃ100 not a lot in todayโs money to clean carbs and check reeds on picking up with the bike still running the same I asked about the reeds and was told they where all fine and still genuine Yamaha steels so today stripped it all myself to find reeds all over the place and after market fitted so not convinced any thing was done at all for the money so after paying for professional advice I have decided to try and put the problem right with the help of genuine like minded lc owners many thanks for any help gavin

Hi
In my head a slight gap isn't anything major but I get the point that they ain't right
If you change the reeds and its the same try taking the airbox lid off or drop the needle 1 notch and see if it improves
Other than that the usual advice would be clean behind the carb brass balls and check the readings on the stator source coils
Stuttering is usually a sign that it's rich but if the hi speed source coil is ropey it could not be making enough power for the cdi at those revs

Thanks very much mid life my plan is change reeds then take your advice on needle as they are the simplest then move on with brass balls as people have advised just didnโt want to go all in if there was a problem staring me in the face from 7k to 10k it goes berserk so could you please advise me if the stator coils were no good would it still rev well at top end many thanks ๐ gavin

My guess is that the second there is any back pressure, thd reeds sill snap shut. JMO.

unfortunately there are around 20 reasons (I kid you not) for the mid range stutter, I'd say 40% of all the bikes I get in, is to fix that problem.
Reeds can be the culprit, so its one of the options, if you want to go back to a good starting point, buy some brand new petals (they are still available, if stuck contact me as I stock Genuine Yamaha ones), they aren't expensive either
As for all of the other reasons, well without sounding unhelpful, its what I do for a living, so I am not about to give away all the knowledge I've learnt over the past 40+years

Thank you to mutts nuts 2 stroke I fully understand your reasons I own a car repair business and often get asked how to repair a vehicle over the phone and like your self I always politely remind them youโre paying for my hard earned knowledge not just my time but I am always grateful to people who donโt tell all but graciously point me somewhere in the right direction even if I have to make a few mistakes on the way ps it would make things a lot easier if you could locate somewhere nearer Essex then I could visit your workshop ๐

No, no, no Far more practical to be Midlands based , so easy for all to attend your emporium. Or just do it proper and set up a mobile business, you know it makes sense.
