Interesting fact for those who live near Heathrow
I know jet fuel is a high grade kerosene (paraffin) and you can also run jet engines on diesel) but used to fly Boeing 777 to Denver regularly
Before 9/11 when you could go up to the flight deck in flight I had the opportunity to go
Pilot said “car does 30 to the gallon what do you think we are doing?”
Said I did no know but at the time the GE 90 was one of the biggest turbofan engines in production
Answer was we were burning thru one tonne of fuel every 10 mins just cruising at 39,000 feet let alone how much it burns during take off😳
Take on 60 tonne at Denver and when we arrive we have 10 tonne left just in case of a delayed landing
Puts the emission for cars and planes taking off from Heathrow every few mins into perspective and make the RD look positively good to the gallon😂

I’m shocking at maths so this is probably wrong, I’ve also done a lot of rounding and on reading it back it’s shot full of holes, but then most climate related stuff is:
One ton per ten minutes is 6 tons an hour.
A gallon of petrol wights about 6lbs.
That gives you a fuel burn of 2000 gallons an hour.
Assume the plane flies at 500mph and carries 400 people.
That works out at moving 400 people 500 miles for 2000 gallons of fuel. 5 gallons per person
One car would take 16 gallons of fuel to move 1 person that distance. 16gallons per person.

No you maths is about right Air travel regarding fuel is very economic it’s just the amount we burn everyday is staggering and will never be replaced with batteries 😂😂 The turbofan engine is an engineer marvel that allows long distance travel as the turbo fan has something called bypass ratio and with todays engines having a bypass ratio of at least 80% meaning only 20% of the air entering the engine passes thru the jet engine itself with the other 80% “funnelled” around the outside of the engine as it is much more efficient to move a very large volume of air at a relative “low speed” rather than “squirt” a smaller but higher velocity of air out of the jet engine itself (think fighter jet) In essence the turbofan is a very hi tech propeller driven by a jet engine😎 That why when you look thru the turbofan you can see a ring of light round the engine itself

France. Interesting idea Al. When the EU smoking ban came into force they simply ignored it. Defense de fumer signs everywhere and an ashtray on every table. I like that a lot. When they put up no parking signs overnight in Paris the cars parked there anyway (as they always had), got clamped, they cut the clamps off. After a few weeks the signs were removed. I like that even more. However they are on a par with Italy for corruption. The police are the worst of the lot. One of the many scenes I have witnessed actually happened in Corsica. Lunch time and we were at a sleepy cafe having a coffee when a cop car pulled up. Four of them got out and sat down, had many beers each and a lot of food. Then got up and drove off. Never paid a penny and no tip of course. I did ask the owner about this and he gave a gallic shrug and said it's always been this way.

Hi Alex
Don’t think police are much better over here
And yes all countries seem to suffer some corruption but I do respect they way the normal French person in the street will protest rather than just accept it and took it to the extreme many years ago when one famous rich lady said to the starving poor “let them eat cake” so the starving poor decided enough was enough and protested using a guillotiné 😉
Swindon suffers from plenty of bike theft and scum riding mx bikes in balaclavas etc and stabbing are in the rise but police nowhere to be seen or if they are about just seem to not do nothing most likely due to all the softies in this country tying the police’s hands saying it would be wrong to knock them off the illegal bikes as you might hurt them as not wearing a helmet😔
Best wishes Al

Sad to hear Swindon has gone that far downhill Al. Wasnt like that when I lived there, but that was 20years back almost. Sure it had its issues with theft but the UK's modern young person's scoot/MX bike and balaclavas is like some kind of apocalypse movie now when i see the footage.
No where is perfect of course, we have plenty of crime here with gangs shooting eachother every few months, but we dont seem to have quite the same issues as the UK... not yet anyway.

Hi Jon Yes I accept every large town / city has its issues When we moved to Swindon in 2007 it seemed the place to be with a low crime and a thriving town center But gradually over time the town centre has become run down, big companies like Honda have left and like you said the balaclava bike gangs are an epidemic Just the other month a teenager was stabbed and killed not two hundred yards from where I live just for his coat by three teens on e-bikes and balaclavas What I don’t understand it the lack of basic law enforcement (and a decent justice system too) as lots of times the police just sit there and the biker just gives them the finger and continues on so I understand why it is happening as they feel untouchable and if that trend of “law enforcement” continues nothing is going to change Oh well like I said no point in moaning as it not going to change so like I said time to move away from the city and back out away from the masses once we have got Logan my eldest into Uni Take it easy Best wishes Al

I’ve just checked the location of an anodising company I will be using to see if it fell within the ULEZ zone. Came across a ULEZ compliant car checker at tfl.gov.uk I thought I’d check my Focus ST250 for a laugh. Would you believe it, it is ULEZ compliant!

I was sad to see how Swindon has gone downhill when I last visited. It was never very 'towny' if im honest post 2000, but in 2023 the center felt more like a rough estate than a modern place. Part of that could have to do with lack of investment, not least as the locals chose in the early 2000s to spend less of their money on council tax instead of having the council improve things, which was a weird decision and didnt bode well. I agree the stories of UK (and here too) law enforcement is very lack lustre now, bleeding hearts have taken the bite out of the job i reckon and as you say without any teeth it will only get worse. Will it take some kind of public uprising against crime to happen to fix that? back in the 90s an ex boxer cleaned up Manchester Rd of the prossies, I doubt he did that by chatting and a cuddle... just sayin. Yep, time to move away, but really this should be fixed and you shouldnt have to. I know we spoke before and that was alays in your plan, mine too, but its sad to think about it getting worse over the years. Blighty isnt what it was

Just read an interesting article about the Glasgow LEZ
A local car repair company is challenging the legality of it in the courts
Their argument is that the council's reason for implementing it was to improve air quality in the city centre
There are 27 NOX monitoring stations within the city centre
Years ago they implemented phase 1 with controls on bus emissions and some other actions
Phase 2 was the LEZ to get air quality down to a certain level
By the time the LEZ was enforced 25 out of the 27 stations had already met the target without implementing the LEZ
The 2 not reducing are on Hope St. The one with the bloody bus gate at the bottom stopping cars entering - WTF

Let's look at the bright sight of this 2stroke forum. Our RDs are low NOx because of the low burning temperature. Be happy that they are not looking for CxHy or particals like pm2.5. So my 98gsxr would fail because of NOx and my 83ypvs would comply, so happy days.
