Hi folks New to these bikes... and not seen anything like this caliper before
81 250LC
Front caliper clucks over bumps in the road Checking the caliper shows it actually pivots on a pin.. and a couple of shims where the two parts rest together I see elsewhere o the net, there's supposed to be a spring in there, I guess to take up tension and stop the clunk, so perhaps mine is missing - I haven't got that far yet
But I wonder why the caliper is designed like this...never seen anything like nit on other bikes or cars Thoughts?

I have an 81' 250LC and I don't know of any actual spring. Do you mean the sprung metal plate that fits behind the front brake pads that effectively holds them in place by pushing them forward in the caliper?

As red998 said, there is no spring other than the pad spring.

Never seen that spring or aware there was even provision for it, but also never had an early LC caliper. I see the hole in the pic in Steven's link, but had no idea it was there. Amazing to think that after all the years that everyday is a school day, but its not everyday you have your hands on all the parts from all the years. I cant think that a spring of that size would be strong enough to push the caliper enough to stop any movement really, i think its there to stop the plate from rattling. Pretty much any spring of the size would do this, maybe a kick start detent ball spring is similar? (As i said, Ive never had one so cant fully comment on what fits)

Evening folks ...so, I pulled the caliper apart tobight: I'm missing the L shaped shim that sits in a bent steel holder between the caliper and its mount Part no.4W1-25828-50
Or by its alternative name unicorn poop.
Anyone know where to get one, or can lend me 1 in the uk so I can copy it...or can give me accurate dimensions??
...pretty pleez?

The lack of shim would defo be the source of the clunk.
