Friday night and I get a text out of the blue from an old mate: Are you or any of your cronies interested in an old RD250LC that needs a load of work? I said I was and where was it, only 2 miles away and we could view Saturday morning. First impression was it’s an old turd, but the more I looked the more interested I was. The guy had fitted new fork stanchions, new brake caliper piston kit, master cylinder kit, motobatt battery, chain and sprocket, brake shoes and loads of other stuff and intended to ride it as it was to upset the purists, but got bored and concentrated his efforts on his Vincent black shadows! It’s a uk bike, 9 owners, and has all the bits that are expensive to source: uncut mudguard and number plate bracket, complete with original reflector, coil cover, centre stand, and is a matching numbers bike too. Engine case is un damaged, good set of clocks and the standard pipes are very good too I reckon. Does it run? Doubt it, not tried it since last year..... Third kick and off it went! It’s a bit rattly so wants a top end rebuild.... So, it is now in the garage and the more I look the more I think it’s going to end up as a clean, standard bounty bike, as it was when it left the showroom (although it could be an embassy as I only know it was white) It obviously needs a front mudguard (if anyone has one) and the tank is shot (I have one spare) so it’s going onto the ramp and being stripped as soon as time allows. came with a box of bits too and loads of old MOT’s and receipts. It’s really whetted my interest again as I spent the last few years titting around with Honda 90’s and my GPz900R.

Seen it on FB bill. Very nice. It’s complete. Lol. I have a new OEM front in that colour but the shipping would kill it.

Made a start on stripping it down tonight while the FPO was out. The flywheel nut was mega tight but the flywheel itself was loose on the taper..... Seems the nut was threadbound so either the crank threads or the nut are damaged. Rattled it off with my buzz gun but the nut only goes on so far. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this is contributory to why the engine was noisy..........

Thought I’d update where I’m up to with this one. Well, it’s in bits and not a single seized bolt. Just the shock to swingarm pin was stuck so I just sawed it out then knocked out the two ends. Unbelievable considering it’s been under a cover in a garden for seven years... The centre stand was very baggy, so I’ve welded washers to the outer sides of all the lugs to reinstate them, the stand was worn on the top so we welded some pads on and ground them to an angle to suit. Sits correctly now whereas previously it was locking out too far forward allowing both wheels to touch the floor. Made a new 14mm stainless pivot pin too. The o-ring that seals the water pump pipe into the casing was goosed so someone had daubed silicon all over it so there was water in the oil, not enough to cause any damage thankfully I’ve had the casings and footrest plates vapour blasted plus the smaller bits powder coated. The frame, swingarm, centre stand and rear frame bracket are away being coated now. This afternoon I have painted the head and barrels and polished the edges.

Busy Busy Bill!
How was the transmission for rust after sitting in that coffee?

Busy Busy Bill! How was the transmission for rust after sitting in that coffee? The guy i got it from had dragged out of the garden and made a start restoring it - when i dumped the oil it was brand new and only had a bit of water sat on top. It looks like the o-ring on the water pipe through the casing was letting it pass. Maybe me starting it up forced a bit of water through. Anyway, to answer your question it was absolutely fine!!

Still progressing slowly but surely. Annoyingly I built up the bottom end and fitted it into the frame, only to find out the left hand small end in the con rod was out of round so the gudgeon pin wouldn’t fit through the bearing. So, the crank that I’d kept as a good one was in fact not! Threw my toys out of the pram, covered it with a sheet and went on holiday. Anyway, went down to Norbo’s last weekend and collected a recon crank and some other stuff, so now the engine is out again and on the bench for rebuild number 2.....

Some great progress Bill. Bummer about the crank, but we all have a few set backs. Keep the progress and pics coming.

Looks like a great build, by chance do you have the ral code for the yellow No, but I wouldn’t imagine it being correct anyway – the paint is falling off so I don’t think it was done by dream machine. Think it was applied with a dead Yorkshire terrier dipped in underseal.
