I think this is an original fuel cap but I have no key. Is it worth trying to pick the lock to save the cap?

Is there any way of identifying the key type for it?

No numbers on the outside. There are about 6 different Yamaha key profiles, but all the keys I have are not the correct profile for this fuel cap.

Pick it! I've had success with one of those steel pointy metal nail files in the past, good chance the tumblers are well worn by now. Andy.

I agree Andy. A simple quick set of rakes across the tumblers while trying to turn it can work wonders on old locks like this if you dont have real picks. A 90 degree angled lever to turn it will help but its defo possible with a nail file or other small thin 'tool' you can find lying about round the house.

Save it... For sure, Pick the bastid, Really easy to pick as these old locks only use tumblers on one side...

I have a fuel cap pick and more than happy to open the cap for you if you live in the north west, with social distancing of course.

Easiest way to save the cap is to get an angle grinder on the tank , simple .

The last alloy offset cap I bought was £60 off ebay, and that was about 3 years ago, so definitely worth saving They polish up nice if you dont mind non standard; 20180210_112514 by dusty miller, on Flickr

I was going to say what are the letters on the keys that DO NOT fit
May help narrow down the key type
Plus 2 of the types will fit one other type

I watched some you tube videos on how to pick locks. I made my comb from a ground down hacksaw blade, and made my barrel wrench from a ground down allen key. There were some nice lock picking sets on amazon. My findings were....some locks are easy to pick, others are not. Well worth a try though, nothing to loose. Steven.

If you haven’t got the key, then why not simply drill it?
Best to know where to drill and how far, but AFAIK RD locks are all the same dimensions?

I had exactly the same problem, including cap type. I did try several keys and pick locks, including the vibrating type but to no avail. Eventually I took my tank to Simon Wells who managed to unpick it for me then he matched to an ignition and seat lock I had.
Happy days.

Just had a thought 🤔
With the other locks my memory tells me that when you unholy the latch that holds the barrel in the whole lock barrel comes out without the key in it
After the comment about Simon Wells unpicking the lock am I right in thinking the fuel cap lock barrel is removed by inserting a tool into the key hole and catching the 6th latch that is not a key tumbler but locates the barrel
The lock should be able to be turned and the rest of the cap removed
Then you can recode the lock to suit another key

Yes the last tumbler is the barrel lock, but I dont think you can unlatch it from the inside can you?

Yes the last tumbler is the barrel lock, but I dont think you can unlatch it from the inside can you? I thought that's how the fuel cap barrel came out but I may be wrong I've taken a few apart but never got them out from the inside as the tumbler is further up the barrel and there is no room to get a pic in between the cap body and the barrel I'm thought someone had told me they cut a hacksaw blade to go in the keyhole and catch the bottom latch. I may have eaten too much cheese before bed and dreamt that I may need to go to the shed and check. I have a set of new matching barrels and keys (Yes I am a saddo 🙄, I bought a new lockset then got Simon to remove the barrels and fit an old set of barrels and had them matched to a pair of old period correct keys on an n1 resto 🤪) Steve

Ive done a good few now and you move that tumbler with a pick from the back side of the cap once the sliding lock bar mech parts are off the bottom. I dont think its possible to do it from the side where the key goes.
(dont worry i do the same with my keys and locks too Steve)

I have had some success in the past using what I call a scissoring or sawing action, where you take a compatible LC key and gently slide the key up and down while turning to unlock. This seems to somehow trick the tumblers in to aligning but it does not work every time with every key!
