I was looking at getting an angle grinder for doing some cutting and tidying jobs on a couple of bike frames and generally cutting odds and ends.
Avoiding the £20 ones, and only wanting something small, Infound the Bosch GWS 7-115, GWS 750 and PWS 7-115, and Makita GA4530. All in a round £50-60.
Wanted some advice on whether this sort of thing would be OK, not too loud, reliable enough etc.
Cheers
Dave

Can get by without these but once you have one you wonder how you managed without. Can’t say much about choosing. The cheaper ones ought to be ok for occasional use. And if you buy cheap, buy another tool with the saving, can never have too many tools.

I tried a cordless Milwaukee one last week, which was fantastic, but hard to justify the cost for odd jobs

My last £20 one died a few weeks ago after over 10 years of abuse
Just bought another cheap one and it seems really good
Even soft starts unlike my last one which was a bit brutal
I'll try and find a link
Should also say the old one only went t1ts up cause the brushes went

But it appears that’s every 10 to 15 years 😁 I bought cheap from Screwfix 10 years ago it’s still going strong and done several special builds and as everyone knows I’m a fan of a large hammer and angle grinder school of engine 👍

How many of your builds have got Lidl clutch cables or Aldi throttle cables 🤔🥴 Ah, that's a different scenario The cheap grinder isn't heavier and the cable is the right length 😆 Steve

How many of your builds have got Lidl clutch cables or Aldi throttle cables 🤔🥴 I swear by Lidl clutch plates and Aldi cables are considered the best out there. Steer clear of Lidl cables though

Any one remember Power Devil tools, I bought a grinder and circular saw probably 30+ years ago, both have had some hard work and both still going, fitted some new brushes to the grinder a couple of months ago (they always came with a spare set) not bad for £4.95 got three spare 110v grinders that look like they'll never get used.

I have 4 cheap angle grinders in my collection, first one is 25 years old now, it's a Nu-Tool brand, admittedly it's only had occasionally use over the years but it still works fine. The next one I bought were from Focus DIY (remember them?), that's a larger size one, I bought that to cut up a load of paving slabs for a front garden basically. The last two I have came from Lidl over the last few years, so impressed with the first one, variable speeds etc,..I keep a cutting disk on one and a flap or grinding wheel on the other.

I'm really cheap. Mine cost a tenner off eBay aeons ago (an aeon being many many years) and it still works fine. Louder than a Motorhead gig and twice as dangerous.

In a similar vein - pukka Dremmel or cheaper looky-likey? Normally I'd say Dremel but my latest one failed after 11 months but to be fair they replaced under warranty only for that one to go tits up after 13 months. Even Dremel make in China so lose the quality control in my opinion.

buy more than one even if you buy expensive. :/ I had a posh bosch unit but it died so i bought a matebo, it died. i fixed it and yesterday mid job it died again. its hardly used and looks new, but just is junk. German... but junk. Sigh... I pulled out my old cheap chinese Aldi souced ten quid unit and as usual its working fine.
I also have one of the new 20V battery units from Aldi (made by Einhell so is also german worryingly lol) and its great. ok its not perfect, its a portable battery device, ie yes it stops when the going is too forced and its only 10,000rpm not 20k like a mains unit, but you can take it anywhere and use it. Its been great, but i also have other tools that use the same battery (recip saw, chainsaw, hedge cutter, 1/2" impact gun etc) so i only bought it as it was another way to make use of the battery investment. Plus it seems to work well enough when the posh and expensive mains units quit half way through a job as well.
I originally thought that will multiple units i could put a cutting disk on one and flap wheel on another etc... if only they stayed working. Grr... Usually on the battery unit i keep a paint remover disk to remove filler and paint from bike tanks which i can do down the garden so as not to spread dust all over my garage.
Off back to the garage to yet again strip down the Matebo and see whats going on with it. Might have another go at fixing the bosch as well. On Project Binky ( on youtube) they built a grinder tree as they had so many grinders with so many different disks on them. Id quite like that if i could keep mine running... and I really do use them infrequently... maybe thats the issue. hmm...

For the most part I think that a lot of cheap tools have come on a fair way compared to years ago. In the case of Lidl, from Germany/meeting their standards etc,...also you get a 3 year warranty.

In a similar vein - pukka Dremmel or cheaper looky-likey? I'm on my second dremel I've always bought the mains ones They all seem to do the same. Run for 1-2 years of infrequent use but start to sound rougher then using it at high speed on load for a while it starts slowing down and getting really hot This one will die soon too I suspect 😕 Steve

I've killed three genuine Dremels over the past five years, but my orange Black and Decker one is still going strong after two years. I'm more surprised to be writing that then you are to be reading it.

Ive got two dremels, killed one of them and found it was just a broken tiny wire on the windings. Sadly I messed up the repair and had to undo and rewind a whole side of the motor...! i dont advise it, but it works like a charm again tho too ages to rewind lol.
Ive had other fake dremels and only buy the real thing now.
