I bought a hand held Dremel (mains powered) years ago, before the internet years ago...still works just fine!
Alex
(but maybe, like a lot of places, German build quality ain't what it was. Look what happened to Mercedes when they cut R & D by a million quid a day...)

Alex it was when the merc w124 was replaced you could physically feel the difference when you shut the doors and bonnet, it was to compete with BMW and they lost their way and lost their unique identity. Real shame as they were a cracking brand.

So true Veg. Tho now other the German cars have followed suit. BMW with its plastic oil pipes, VW/Audi with woeful quality in its factories, OilGate and engines that lasted under 10k miles and Ive no idea on Porsche but i expect they will have gone the same way. Certainly power tools have. Dremel (owned by bosch) and the others seem to only want to compete with the Chinese... on their level. But I get that, why would you sell me a car or a drill that lasts forever when you can sell me a new one every few years? The perceived quality of the German kit is now sadly only in the mind of the buyers, it left the building a long time ago. They will rue that day at some point, but for now they trade on it yet it wont last.

Had a genuine Dremel, it pack up after 6 months, bought an Ozito and it’s still going two years later at about 1/3 of the price
Couldn’t find the receipt for the dremel
As for an angle grinder I go for the industrial Bosch or Makita ones in 5”, you get so much more life out of the disc than a 4 or 4 1/2

I have since bought an Aldi version as a backup, it came with the flexi wand attachment too, back in the day such items for the Dremel were so expensive.

I too have an original mains dremel. Must have had it about 100 years😁 It still works but does start to slow now under load and gets warm, but with that said it has done a lot of alloy polishing👍😎

I have the dremel felxi wand thingy and its an excellent tool tho i have broken it 3 times now when the tool catches on something, I just pull it apart and weld the end back on the cable (its like a speedo cable) and clean it up and its good to go until i catch it on something again.
FWIW if the dremel motor stops or runs badly you can buy the innards for about 7quid on the dremel website. easy to swap too.

i started with a bosch 30 years ago and still got it, its working as well as it did.. then i got into modifying bicycles and became fed up with having to keep swapping disks for sanding flap wheels, wire brushes et c. so got another, then another and now have 4 hand grinders all with different attachments, grinding disks, flap wheels, cutting disks, wire wheels as it saves so much time swapping bits over and looking for the spanners.. i now cable tie the tools to the flex. Oh and a 9 incher when i want to get some new scars...
think the bosch cost about 50 quid when i bought it and so did the 9, the rest all came from lidl's and screwfix, i've had one maybe two break over time but it's no biggy.. if i blew one up today, hit the net click and collect from toolstation or somewhere like that, nip into town and back creating sparks within the hour

Back on topic, I think some tools are worth paying extra for. However in the case of the angle grinder it’s simply a means of spinning round a cutting disk. The quality of the disk is important, but not the grinder.
I’ve had all sorts over the years and would say they get medium use.
I’ve had a couple of B&Qs own brand (power base?) for at least 10 years and only the last time I went to use one it was dead, so needs repair or replacement.
Think they were just over £20 at the time.
I’ve also got the first angle grinder I ever bought from Wickes about 30 years ago. The bearings are obviously worn as it makes a terrible sound at certain revs/loads but it’s still going strong. I’m really just seeing how long it will last before going bang. The point is it still cuts as well as a new one would.
