Snapped one dammit. Anyone know who sells them? Alex Did it snap whilst you were trying to remove it from it's pivot point or near the tip whilst trying to flex it up and over the stop/resting pin? Anyone got any top tips on how to this and keep the needle intact? I know that Dusty has used a pair of scissors around the pivot to aid removal for example.

I use a pair of teaspoons
Clamp speedo in a vice (by the drive so you don't crush anything)
Turn the needle to 60mph then put a spoon in either side so spoon backs are supported by the face screws and the tips are under the needle
Push down on the spoon handles while a second person holds a large clear food bag over the face
Pick broken needle out of bag and buy a new one lol
Seriously if it brakes don't worry, if it's that brittle I'd rather it broke at that point and not on a pothole

And when you come to put it back on, what are you aligning it??

Buy two and replace both. Then you will not have one looking faded.

I like your 60 idea but don't really understand how you rotate the pivot/spindle to that position before pushing the needle back on??

If you look at the mechanism underneath there is a dome shaped section on the needle shaft that the magnet spins in. You can carefully rotate this to move the needle shaft. It is also where I put alignment marks for 60mph before I remove the needle Steve

Nice work, did you wind the mileage back to 71? Yes, I could have done the 10's reel but was over it by then and I can rack up 70kms pretty quickly so didnt bother. The speedo didnt come with this bike and its a full resto, we dont have old MOTs of anything like that here and I certainly didnt have any with this bike, I bought it as a frame only and the speedo came from a mate, so not bothered about keeping the milage etc. Ive just done a set today. I did both and repainted the temp to get a match as close as poss with the paint I had here. And yes I did have to go back and remove the oil round the screw head that had come up teh thread from the cleaning of the mech earlier in the day. more work lol Jon, Can I ask which paint you used on your needle refurb?, I bought one of those humbrol enamel model paints recently, but on reflection I thinks it’s too dark a shade of orange! I actually used a mixture of paints, some high vis dayglo orange and a bit of yellow and some black and red from my stash of colours here. Its not quite as perfect as it looks in this pic as the flash has toned it down a bit, but its certainly much better than just the dayglo stuff which was very bright. Ive seen NOS ones with dayglo, so thats what they probably were tho, sadly skills plus doesnt show what that bike had, unless Ive missed it.

You can get the needle past the stop ok if you don't push it fully home until it's past the stop.

You can get the needle past the stop ok if you don't push it fully home until it's past the stop. So I guess that you try and prise the old/current needle up a bit before lifting it over the stop pin.

Sorry, I meant when replacing the needle, you can turn it on the pin from about 7 o'clock on the dial, take it over the stop then push into place.

If you buy the dials, just buy the ebay XT needles... you will need them. the old needles have seen too much sun and are brittle anyway.
