What about nickel coating the frame?

What about nickel coating the frame? Ooooh now you’re talking!, love the ‘mellow’ colour of nickel compared to chrome. Only downside I can see would be one of maintenance 😬.

I think that would be too much, to have a blingy frame. It will be black gloss I'm fairly certain now. Plus the old aircooled frame isn't exactly the neatest of constructions, and it's imperfections would stand out a mile with chrome or nickel, whereas a powdercoat will help cover some of the more minor flaws. It will help the other parts stand out a bit more too. I took the final CAD mock up of the headlight/number board to Clive yesterday. He is going to make it out of 1 sheet of 3mm steel, and fold the edges in 90 degrees to create the sides of the mount that will bolt to the fork clamps. 2 holes will be cut for the lights, and the M4 mounting bolts will pass through the front of the plate, through the mount that I bought for the lights and nylocs on the back. Forgot to get a pic of the mount but the lights are mounted in their frame like this; 20190623_103257 by dusty miller, on Flickr I'm considering fitting indicators too. Originally I wasn't going to bother, but I've found some really small LED ones that are super bright. The Pv switchgear is wired for indicators, so as they are so small I may do it. I will pick the bracket later next week. I'm going to get him to make up 4 threaded spacers for the footrest mounts, and when I strip the frame for powdercoat, I will get him to weld those on too. Hopefully that really should be the last of the engineering !! Dusty

Hi Dusty 3mm steel plate is very thick. Is there a reason for this?

Hi mate Strength mainly. The lights are metal bodied - they don't weigh loads but I wanted a strong plate to support them. I might add other components to the inside of the plate so I wanted something that would support parts bolted to it plus withstand vibration. Maybe overkill but I don't want any issues down the line. Clive suggested 3mm so I was happy to go with that. Dusty

I can see what you mean Mr K Been a bit slow around the bike this last week. Clive will hopefully have the front plate done by Friday. I mis understood him when I dropped it off - he plans to make it from 3mm ally plate, not steel, so should be a bit lighter !! I fitted the carbs the other day; 20190702_185428 by dusty miller, on Flickr These came with a 29L cable fitted but no provision for the oil pump cable - it had been cut out. I do have a new Lc speedo cable which looks the same length, so I'm hoping I can transfer the slides onto the new cable; 20190702_185516 by dusty miller, on Flickr Looks like the left carb has had a spigot fitted for an oil feed - it's blanked off with a black plastic cap. Can anyone confirm that's what it is ? Never had PWK's before so not sure what should be there. Cheers Dusty

Possibly a vacuum take off for the fuel tap? Andy.

Looks like they are original KR1 carbs
They had a brass vacuum take off on one carb and the other had nothing so you had to drill and fit a spigot to it

Cheers for the info guys Not sure what they are off ? They came with a Hybrid that came and went, and I thought they were probably a pair as opposed to 2 separate single carbs. The left side has a long cable to adjust the throttle stop - obviously handy if the carbs are buried beneath a fairing and a big chunky frame ! Are Kr1 carbs good to use ? Dusty

Dusty KR1 carbs are just pwk 28's that were fitted as standard. I have them fitted on my hybrid. Yes the long adjuster was to allow the left carb tick over to be adjuster from the right side They will be a pair. There will be a serial number on them which should be 1 digit apart to prove they were selected at the same time The good thing is they should have the n68 needles and 3.5 slide that you will need for foam filters Steve

Spot on Steve V607 and V608 marked on the carbs. I presume I can use the vacuum spigot on the right side for an oil feed, meaning I only need the left modding ? It will end up at Mutts for set up anyway, but it would be good to know what's needed before it travels north ! Dusty

You could use the spigot but I drilled it out and fitted a matching pair of spigot
You can use the oil spigot off an old carb and glue it in with araldite
I think ideally they should have a smaller bore though.
If I were doing it again I'd buy m5 brass bolts for cutting, drilling a 1.5mm hole in then getting the threads machined off the end and a barb cut into it

Thanks for the info Steve Mutts will end up with it all so I will get him to do what's necessary for the oil feeds. Made an expensive error of judgement this week Picked up the front plate today from Clive. He has done a great job as usual, and made the plate exactly to my template. I got it home, drilled some holes for mounting the lights and the plate to the headlight brackets, fitted it to the bike and... decided I hated the look of it !! I think the lights are a bit too close together - affected by the bracket they bolt too, but looking at the front of the bike is like looking at Bjorn Borg ! Just doesn't suit it, and even adding colour wont change it significantly. It's funny but the headlight issue has been the only real part of the build that I had no plan for - you may remember last year I tried a few different combos, none of which really ticked the box for me. I like the idea of a number board but it's not a simple look to get right for the rest of the bike. So off it came, and plan B was to fit the small headlight Steve gave me earlier in the year. I didn't go with this initially as it's got quite a deep bowl, and my headlight brackets sat the light quite far forward, partly due to their design and also where the mounting holes are on the headlight shell. So I kept the fork clamps but made 2 new brackets that sat the headlight further back - almost touching the headstock but there is clearance, and it looks a lot better, and more in keeping with the theme of the bike. This is Bjorn; 20190705_204441 by dusty miller, on Flickr And this is plan B !; 20190705_204429 by dusty miller, on Flickr New brackets sit it back by an inch or so, but it's surprising what a difference it make to the "look". Headlight shell will end up powdercoated black but I will keep the chrome rim. Got a nice pair of projector beam lights going cheap !! Dusty

looks spot on , suits it well I did think the number board might suit more of a flat tracker style bike . I also thought about offering some of my KTM and Honda plastic number boards from my supermotos but guessed you would try your CAD mart

Number boards always look good with no lights and in my opinion a bit of a compromise with a light(s). I do like the twin lamp set up. Have you thought about a style similar to the endurance racers.
The plate looks well made. Shame it didn't pan out.
I'm sure your in good company as we never see how many changes are made before some of the best modified bikes are made.

Been off the patch for a wee while and now catching up on everyones progress. Bike is looking spot on Dusty and plan B for the headlight looks absolutely right. Pity you didn't like it after all of your effort and cornflake packet CNC design and fabrication I am sure though you will be making a few more changes and adjustments yet as things roll from here. John Now where are all those 31k parts I stashed in the hut/garage/loft for the rebuild?

Single light looks good. Better than it looked on my shelf lol
I'd try something with the number board first as you've put a lot of effort and money into it.
Paint the front white, the sides and a border on the front black then put the number 88 on it with the lights in the top of the 8's
May make it look less 80's robot

Yea, the single headlight will stay, now it sits further back. I've made loads of fashion faux pas with bikes over the years - all part of building something a bit different, and I don't lose sleep over it anymore !! I did add some sticky backed plastic to the plate to see if it made a difference but I had sort of made my mind up as soon as I offered it up with the lights fitted, and a bit of colour didn't improve it for me. I think the issue is the lights are too close together. I should have ignored the spacing on the bracket and not used that, and done a different spacing on the plate itself. And vertically mounted may look better as they are so small. Good pic Morgy, but I've found a pic I may get printed onto sticky backed vinyl that I will apply; Bjorn-Borg by dusty miller, on Flickr Should suit it well !! Dusty

Cheers Mark Had a bad back all week , but it's easing now, so no work done on the bike, but I thought I would get her out on the drive and put the tank and seat on for the first time since the engine went in. Gotta say I'm pretty pleased with how it's all coming together; 20190713_101322 by dusty miller, on Flickr 20190713_101351 by dusty miller, on Flickr 20190713_101748 by dusty miller, on Flickr Being laid up for a week has given me time to think about things. Main one being I have a different, simpler idea for an oil feed tank now which wont need fabrication. Hopefully sort that and a chain this week. Dusty
