Morning all, Having this week picked up several boxes of bits that my local friendly powder coater was selling, it appears that I have a complete '91 YPVS F2! Actually, it wasn't as simple as that - there's been at least a year of negotiations.... But, in one box there is a freshly-rebuilt stock motor, in another lots of new bits in Yamaha bags, in another there are lots of green bolts, and in another there are lots of shiny zinc-plated bolts. There are still quite a few jobs to do (rebuild brakes, look at the forks etc.) but it's all pretty-much there! Matching numbers too... I'm not sure how it'll be finished, though at the moment I'm thinking period reversible mods. So, I'll post some pics when there are some worthy of posting as I'm presently sorting through stuff to see what's there and what's not, and to work out which fastener goes where! It's been a while since I fettled my last YPVS... I'll try not to ask too many daft questions as I know how to search, though in the meantime if anyone has a spare rear Astralite (preferably gold) kicking around as I have a front...

Oh, I thought Astralites were still available, but just gone on the Rennstar website, and they have stopped re-making.

Thank you all for the warm welcome! Progress was made yesterday. The airbox went in first, followed closely by the motor. I then cleaned up the loom and started fitting the electrical gubbins. I have a couple of wiring repairs to make, such as replacing the main fuse holder which has sadly disintegrated.... I would post a pic of the progress, but as Photobucket have kindly changed their linking policy I need to find somewhere else that will host photos... As I'm new here and haven't posted enough to access the classified section, would anyone have a nice set of forks and a nice aftermarket shock kicking about before I go and buy a new YSS?

Hi Flickr is a free pic hosting site that a lot of guys now use. Markhoopey did a great thread on here on how to get started on it. Norbo used to sell the main fuse boxes, check his shop out. And a Yss can be bought new for less than £250. Great shock and great value.

Cheers, I've just signed up to Flickr so here's a test... I've found a good deal on a YSS shock, but if anyone has anything interesting I'm all for recycling! Also, I wouldn't mind a cut down rear mudguard if anyone has one?

Lots of little random bits and bobs were ordered last night and today, and I have an order to place with Norbo too. Plus, this morning I scored a set of R forks with good stanchions so I can hopefully build a good set out of two pairs. I'm going to use the standard wheels for now, but maybe long-term it might get FZR600 forks once I can find a rear wheel as that's what my Astralite is out of. But, it's coming together much quicker than I anticipated. I'm going to have to work harder to pay for it all!

Two questions. My target is to have it rideable before the 22nd of September as I'd like to do the classic track day at Cadwell. Is anyone going?
The second question is the dreaded tyre question. As I'm planning to have it on the road I'd ideally like road legal but sticky tyres. I have a 110 AM22 front in the garage, but it's not technically legal...
So, other than Continental CR2s which cost a fortune are there any others that would be up to the task. Having searched high and low I'm thinking not....

Cheers Mars. I was hoping to find something a little stickier, but without going to a 110 front and a 130 rear there doesn't appear to be a great deal about nowadays. I'm sure I'll come up with something...
Also, could someone kindly point me to the thread that mentions chopping down the stock fork springs? I had a good search but can't seem to find it...

I've got exactly that tyre size combo on my LC with wide TZR rims. Seems to turn in quick enough. By FZR, what era are you on about? USD or conventional? Jon

The crmc and yam past masters all appear to use Avon roadriders for their race bikes.

Jon I'll be on stock F2 YPVS rims, being a 2.15 front and a 2.5 rear, so a 110 and 130 is probably a little wide but it's about as good as it gets I think. Regarding the potential FZR forks, they'd be RWU from an early one as I want to keep the bike looking period at least. But, as above I've found what look to be a good set of 350R forks so I can hopefully build a good set out of two...

I've got a set of early FZR forks in good condition from memory. I got as far as removing the stem from the yokes, welding up, and re-machining the bearing surface to shorten the stem before deciding on TZR 250 2MA forks. For racing I've also bought a set of Goodridge discs for above. They are cast iron rotors, so rust, but are supposed to be the better option in terms of performance. If you were interested, I could send photos and a price. Jon

I'll get it built first and see where I go from there...

The R model has a different head stock to the F2, so I suspect the yoke is different in some way too.
If it's just the R fork legs, they should fit the F2 yokes.

Jon Yep, they'll be going into F2 yokes, particularly as I have a brand new top one. I shall be comparing the internals between the F2 and the R to see what's interchangeable and which bits look to be best. They may also get some YSS PD valves whilst I'm on...

A little more progress today as work was aborted at lunchtime. Some bits and bobs were painted, including the switchgear which has come out pretty good! It's a lot better than it was (the flecks are just from the cloth I wiped them with).... I'm quite enjoying this rebuild lark, though my bank balance disagrees....

Today the head washers arrived and so it could be torqued down, and now the yokes are in I couldn't resist dropping on the Telefix clipons, repainted ignition switch and the forks. The forks need to come back out to be rebuilt and so that I can carry the chassis downstairs. It's coming together quicker than I expected...

Yesterday I had a hangover after a night seeing a few bands in Leeds, so I spent far too long on eSkip. But, what it meant though was that I had to get out of bed at the crack of dawn this morning (still with the tail-end of a hangover) and drive to Grimsby via Selby. I went to Selby to pick up this for a song: - It's almost new, and was incorrectly listed as a 110/80 front but it turns out to be a 100/90 so it will be a better fit. The chap actually had two of them, so it would've been rude not to... Then, off to Grimsby to pick up this: - So, it was time to move the chassis downstairs, so Mrs Coose reluctantly gave me a hand. In went the swinger and so it's now up on stands. It feels like a massive leap forward! It looks like work will be quiet for the next week or two (I'm self-employed) and then we go on holiday, but what it means is that this week I can start looking at the bodywork and try to get that passed on for painting. Whilst that's away I can get the forks and brakes refinished and rebuilt, fit the new fuse box, recover the seat, sort out the clocks, headlight and rear mudguard and then it's start-up time! I can't wait...

Quite a step forward today. I picked up a new Yuasa battery (Coose's tip of the day - don't use anything else!) I hoped I'd simply drop it in and the servo would spring into life. Yeah, right.... I had 12v to ground everywhere I expected, and the lights illuminating the clocks worked, but nothing else. Eventually I realised that there was no neutral from halfway along the frame to the back. So, out with my old friend Stanley and I found what I thought was the only point that the neutral wiring was grouped and soldered. I chopped out the solder, cleaned the wires and crimped the joint. No improvement.... I then chopped the wrap back again and found the second hideous joint, which was swiftly replaced. I then checked the rear light - nothing... Chop back the wrap, find and remake the last joint and then this happened (though the footage was taken after I'd rebound the loom)... Not only this, but with the assistance of a chum who's restoring a KR1 as I type it appears that we have a geet big spark! I'm so happy...

Some more bits arrived today so into the garage I went. The forks were rebuilt, and as a bonus I found that the old springs from my Z1000J drop straight in! They're noticeably stiffer, but we're waaaayyyy too light on the Zed. More on this once it's on its wheels and I've measured the sag. Anyway, new front calipers appeared. I'm not sure if they'll become permanent as they're not really within keeping of what I'm trying to do, but I'll see once it's going. Clocks on, bars repositioned, cables connected... Then, I just had to...

nice coming on a treat coose i filed the triumph off the calipers and repainted you will be glad you used them.its a good upgrade Thank you! You'll be pleased to know that I have just ordered some new (drilled titanium) caliper bolts, so the Triumph calipers will be staying for now. I just need to sort some brake pipes as I don't think I'll squeeze in anything that was originally destined for a YPVS. I had also thought about milling the front face of the calipers but I'll see if it bothers me that much. All being well my new back tyre will be here tomorrow so I should get the bike on its wheels over the weekend. Tonight I cleaned the oil tank, so once the new radiator arrives and I've polished the Microns it'll be time to kick it into life....
