Im reading this and wondering, do people really think a dealer would give you 2k back on a 3k purchase? Im thinking not... even tho its full of iffyness. If you broke an LC youd get more than 1k back on the parts sans frame and cases. We still havent had pics OP... Hopefully you should be able to see one now.

Shame to hear of your problem with the 250 but you're now amongst some of the best LC fanatics there are. Nice T4 (if yours?!), if that's any consolation..

Not a bad looker at all. I defo think the dealer could break his way to getting most of their money back considering they bought it for less than they sold it for etc. As we know there are plenty of people clamouring for parts for these... Buy the 3k bike in the sales section, its my favourite ad of all time on here, the pics are amazing

Ok, hear that... but please do post the photos of the frame no. and add the reg no. here, its fine to wait until youve had your cash back of course and your deal is concluded, but please do post them.
If you do that it will help protect someone else in the future as they will hopefully find this thread... plus we don't all need to go thru the questions and answers to help them like we have for you. If we can save them time and money and catch the issue early for them ts a bonus right?
I am thinking the engine wasnt from the original stolen bike if its number is still intact, assume it has all the original vertical lines on the number area, or has it been ground smooth?

Looks like a tidy bike dunc. Someone went to a bit of trouble to f**k up the numbers... if they were stamping the frame, why not make it 4L1?

Cos they didnt have paperwork with the frame number of a 4L1 Duncan. In the UK the paperwork and numberplate lives with the bike unlike here in Aus, even 30 years off the road you can find the record in the system and it goes back on the road with the original plate. You can register something brand new yourself, but its hassle and requires more paperwork to prove conformity to the design rules, similar to the Aussie ADR. Many of us imported new cars from Europe in the late 90s/early 2000s and did this, cost was £25 and bunch of tax. Registering older things from overseas is covered elsewhere on here but you need to date the year of manufacture you also need to prove there no taxes to pay (imports, back taxes etc). All in all its much simpler to find documentation for a scrapped bike and restamp it, and any fool (plenty were) can buy a set of punches and a grinder, and with a stolen bike youve made a few quid, even better if its still registered as it just carries on in the system.

I thought I read it had matching numbers bar the 4L1... Which seemed a bit dumb! Now I see I didn't read it properly, it all makes sense!

You could do a hpi check using the engine number and see what it comes back with. If the engines from a stolen bike your wasting your time with it even if you changed the frame it wouldnt be matching numbers so you would need a frame and engine cases and thats a lot of work

Dod you think so? surely the fact its registered and on the road means the engine number is ok as thats part of the data that makes up the record of this bike and running a stolen engine number would flag up somewhere in the DVLAs searches and the cops come round?
