...not good, i hope it all gets sorted out, nothing worse than been fu*&ed over !
I had a similar experience years ago. I bought a 250 lc in bits in boxes. Once I checked it over, I informed the DVLA that I had just bought it and the frame number didn't match the log book. About 2 weeks later, the police stolen vehicle section turned up un-announced and asked to see the bike. After looking at the bike, they said I could keep it, but they would have to take the log book off me, as it was registered stolen umpteen years ago, and I could re-apply for a number plate once I got it ready for an mot. They said they were less than interested in an old motorbike that was stolen years ago, they just wanted to see it, and know where it was now. I spoke with Paul Dawkins, and he said i could put it back on the road, but it would always show up on the DVLA stuff as stolen recovered. I powder coated the frame and put it in the loft, iv never had it on the road, i suppose it would be ok for a track bike? steven.

Any cash deal would need to cover you buying a frame and a set of matching number engine cases (I assume the engine is stamped with the same number?), and cover all the parts you would swap out to change over to those - and that assumed you would do the work yourself, for free... paying a professional to do it wouldnt be cheap at all. Of course you could just get a good deal and use it like it is and know you will ned to find those later as selling it like it is is going to be hard. However, prices of matching frame/engine number parts seems to go up not down, but you could wait I guess... especilaly as its a good runner and is motd etc so do the work when it does blow up (its a two stroke lol) then swap the bits over... So a cash back deal would need to be somewhat significant i would think, its not 'a few hundred quid' etc

Hi, Thanks for all the reply's, I've had a good look at the bike today and it's a LC frame with the xs frame number stamped on it, so as you've all said it's a ringer. I'm really gutted, it's such a nice bike and runs spot on. I paid 3K for it, I put a small deposit over the phone to hold it for me for two weeks before I could collect. As with most of these things they always look better in photos, But this looked better than I thought It would and I was surprised how nice it was in the flesh. The shop has said they will refund and collect it from me with no problems. We also talked of doing a deal cash back for me to keep it. Any thoughts on that? Or should I just lake the money and run! Just get your money back and think yourself lucky you did. If it were me and they offered 'cash back' to keep it I would want about £2950. Take them up on any kind of deal and you will never be able to sell it without buying a frame and crankcases and swapping everything over, and if you do that you are just ringing it again but doing it in a different way!

You could rebuild the bike onto a good set of matching RD250LC 4L1 engine casings and frame. Would cost a fair amount though, as you would need to buy the matching set with a V5 (Probably about £300 to £400???) Powder coat frame £80 Vapour blast casings £50 Rebuild engine with new seals and gaskets £250?? So around £700 to £800 plus labour.... Would need to be around £1500 to be worth doing, assuming you can find a good matching set of engine casings and frame.
It is a lot less grief to just find another one.

Send a PM to Kev (redbimota on here), as he always has nice imported original 250LCs and 350LCs, some of which need very little work to make very nice.

Just noticed you only have four posts so can't see the For Sale section yet. If you get another six posts or comments under your belt you may find the answer to what you're looking for!

Full refund and collection of the bike from you is what I would be demanding. And a refund of any costs you incurred in your 400 mile trip to collect the bike. OEB agree with oeb ! totally never mind someone else will be on the forum in about a month asking about frame no's as the shop will put it up for sale again ! tell the shop to get on here someone will sell them a propper lc frame with v5 . pitty really i bet a lot more people on here's bikes have a jaded past ,but what you dont know dont hurt you everyone i knew that had an lc was a bit of a lad !

Might be a good idea to post the registration number and frame number in the title of this thread (perhaps when youve concluded your deal with the shop) so that anyone who buys the bike or that frame and reg no combo will be directed here if they google it. Always worth googling the reg plate of a new bike... you never know what you'll find. Chap emailed me a while back cos he'd bought one of my old bikes, was happy as larry to chat to someone who'd owned it years back.

Send a PM to Kev (redbimota on here), as he always has nice imported original 250LCs and 350LCs, some of which need very little work to make very nice. I sent a couple of text messages and left a couple of voicemails ref that RD bike for sale by Kev last week to try and view it, one of my mates local to him was going to look at for me, but that person called Kev didnt respond, so perhaps he has sold it or he is working away abroad at the moment or on holiday, I bought a different bike instead.

Kev has bikes every month or so. Most the bikes he gets are pretty good, but they don't hang around for long.

This happened to my brother although it was restamped to matching numbers ,the police took it away eventually he got it back as the police couldn't find the original frame number Same thing happened to my mates when we were 18. They bought a Suzi GT50 from an acquaintance who was a bit dodgy but it was cheap for farm use. It had a 3 made into an 8 in the numbers, badly done. seller shurgged and said 'do you want it or not?' they didnt know any better so said yes. One of my mates was riding it down a private lane one day when a bloke called the cops cos was noisy. the cops confiscated it and he spent the night in the cells, both cos he had no paperwork or keys etc. 3 months later the cops called him and he thought he was in real trouble, but the call was to say 'come and get your bike back', they couldnt prove the bike was restamped, even tho it looked like it was done by a 5yr old. mental I thought and was glad i was well away from the whole escapade.

tell them you want £2000 back then get another frame and crankcases if it costs you £1000,you still have bike your happy with and a £1000 cheaper than what you originally paid.. That was my first thought as £350 gets you a euro frame and cases. But then £100 to powder then you can easily spend another £200 on gaskets and seals swapping the engine then you can register it. Reckon with bits and bobs your looking at a grand but then there are the 2 negatives One is some will frown as it's an import and say it's worth less money Secondly technically you have just ringed it again and it's still mostly stolen Not worth it Steve

I think take your money and walk away.. not knowing when it was "rung" is a big issue as it may have been stolen just last year and if the identity is ever revealed you could lose your bike and your money. err on the side of caution and spend your 3k on something you can prove the history of. usually some very nice tackle for sale on this forum for example.

Im reading this and wondering, do people really think a dealer would give you 2k back on a 3k purchase? Im thinking not... even tho its full of iffyness. If you broke an LC youd get more than 1k back on the parts sans frame and cases.
We still havent had pics OP...

I wish I could post a photo of it, It really is a nice bike. The mars bar paint work is near mint, exhausts unmarked, new tyres etc I would say it's been restored around 5-6 years ago and done just over 1000 miles since then. The hpi reporters a colour in 1989 from blue to black. So I would think it was probably ring at the some time. All the paper work I've got for it have the 4G6 frame number. I've mot's back to 2008 that have the 4G6 frame number too. The mot's also say it's a RD250 as well. The Dealer said he could brake it and get back £2000 for it. However he also said he's got someone else how want to buy it. I'm still gutted as its a very nice bike, I've got a air cooled 250e that I done a nut & bolt resto on and it looks nearly as nice as well that.

If you or the dealer brake it,I"ll have the petrol tank!!!!!!!!!! God I"m getting desperate for a decent tank!!!!!!!!! The tank is nearly mint, no rust under in and all the seams are good. I would say it's had a new tank at some point.
