I am in agreement with the smell, however I have been advised to drop a bit in the tank for the smell as the oil is a bit thick for the auto lube mechanism. I run semi at the moment as I am running in

Do not use castrol R in your oil tank.
It is for pre mix usage.
I think it it also not compatible with synthetic oils.
I have seen people drop a cap full of castrol r in the fuel tank to get the smell of the gods. Not sure how safe that is though.
You need to search for castor based oils and do some research

They stopped making Castrol R a long time ago. The equivalent is Power 1 Racing 2T - you can use it with the autolube system and it smells quite lovely

I just put equivalent of a spoonful of castrol R in my tank, you don't need much to get the smell. An old lad near me gives me it, I think he bought loads when they stopped making it

Castrol R is a castor based oil. Rockoil do one and also Morris's of Shrewsbury make one as well. There will be others too.

I don't think it smells the same as it did in the olden days.............. When I was a bin lid, you could smell it on your clothes the day after
The current 2t oil I use smells like fly spray.........

Castrol A747 is excellent for race two stroke engines, but premix only. Expensive though. Around £15 to £20 per litre.

When I was a boy i used castor R30 in the autolube with no problems however I used the bike daily, think it would clog up if I used it know as I don't use the bike daily !! however a drop of A747 or R40 in the tank seems to do the job:)

Anybody used Duckhams QTT ? I used to use it in my LC2 back in the early 90's. Obviously not available any more but i remember it was pricey and it smelled like toffee in the bottle and sweet from the pipe. Cant see any info on the net about it.

As a highly intelligent know it all 17 year old with a new 250B I used to put ordinary castor oil in the tank for that intoxicating "ahh speedway" smell.
then because I knew everything, I drained the oil tank and filled it with R40. The smell was unbelievable, much better than my mates patchouli oil.
months later, after having to have a rebore and rebuild after only a thousand miles or so do to having a clogged & coked up motor and being called a stupid tw#t by my local yam dealer i learnt the error of my ways,,,,,,that will always do it,,,,,,,,maybe I should have used R30 instead. Its not like it was cheaper than Shell 2T or anything.

I read somwhere that adding extra oil in the tank when running autolube the engine runs hotter . Apperently its a myth when running in that extra oil in the tank is a good thing again when running a standard autolube system . Just what i read , but stand to be corrected.

You do need to be careful think of it like this... any oil added in the fuel effectively means that there's less fuel going through the jet so it can make you run weak.

Castor oils like castrol R will not mix with synthetic oils, for gods sake don't put any on top of the remaining oil in your auto lube oil tank. I religiously run castrol A747 on a pre mix basis, (30:1) this gives you that classic 'Castrol R smell' with the modern lubricating properties of synthetic oil. I have been using it for around 5 years, I've just had my 350 engine tuned / rebored / crank rebuilt by graham file and he confirmed this was the best oil to use in LC's / YPVS' if your giving it beans. But do be aware that the A747 has a shelf life (check date on bottle), also if it's mixed with petrol, it will start to loose it lubricating properties after around 3 weeks. It's also susceptible to cold weather, if it's been on your shelf in the garage all winter, bin it.
