Today was the day for the Zeeltronic install. Frank B came over and got after it. Frank is a wiring wizard. Thank you Frank!! About 2 hours later it fired up and ran on the 2nd kick.We used part of the plug kit and the very cool fancy crimpers from Economy Cycle. Thanks John! The plugs for the power valve controller were a direct swap. The Canadian version has the 29K CDI box with round pins instead of flat so we cut the plugs off of the CDI box to avoid altering the main harness. The new Zeeltronic units don't have any provisions for mounting the box to the bike. I keep heavy duty velcro on hand and it worked pefectly for the new Zeeltronic CDI/power valve controller now mounted in the spot formerly occupied by the factory power valve controller. M in SC provided the 7 step power valve control curve and the 9 step ignition timing curve developed after hours of extensive testing on his RZ and we input the data into the Zeel known as the Hasse Curve with the hand held programmer. Mark also provided telephone tech support for Frank B and me. Thanks Mark!! I test rode it after I got it back together and it is a different motorcycle. More power everywhere, more linear power delivery and better temperature control.

Finally finished a basket case nut and bolt refurb rebuild- almost a year it took- tried starting it last night but no spark. Done the usual, plugs, caps, kill switch, coil (gives a spark on the working LC) stator-looks like a refurb, pulser coil-gives the correct reading, today Iโm considering swapping the CDI from the working LCโฆbut have already emailed Mutts to see if he has one of those solve-it-all VAPE ignition kits in stock. ยฃ444 will solve all me problems. Basket money pit! It looks pretty, but doesnโt want to fire. Multi-meterโs out. Never a good sign. Not that it should prevent a spark happening but Rechecked the timing. Itโs spot on. Stator at least looks in good nick but you never know with 40 year old electrical components Prepare to give up your CDI unit. Luckily itโs easy to access. Not. Wait: is the CDI the box on the rear mudguard? Then where are the source (or exciter) coils? Plot thickens.

Spent 5 hours trying to bleed the back brake after rebuild and failed ๐จ I struggled trying to bleed the R1 front calipers on my 900F hybrid. In the end what worked was to fit a large syringe on the bleed nipple and suck the fluid through. Worked a charm and now got a rock hard lever, even better than my two PowerValves! Give it a go. Oh, and put some PTFE tape on the bleed nipples!๐

Also registered my '82 4L0 as historic this morning, no hassle at the post office, got a V5 and nil road tax receipt
I imported it to the UK in 2004 and declared the year of manufacture as 7 Apr 83 so have had to wait a while longer for it to hit the 40 year mark, didn't want the faff of getting a year of manufacture certificate to alter the V5 once I was aware of the historic registration process:

Recovered the seat on my 4LO, had to repair some of the seat foam which was pretty satisfying. Quite like doing them as you can make them fit really well with some time.

verbotten, I've got that problem coming up this year with my 1985 RZ350. It was imported from the States and first registered in 2001 so that's what it says on the V5.
It was built in November 1984 so will obviously be 40 this year but it doesn't say that on the log book.
So I'm hoping a dating certificate will be enough to prove this to dvla?๐ค

I have the Date of first registration and a Date of first registration in the UK. I assume that's because I provided the original log book from Austria when I registered it in 2018.

I must have sent the Nova certificate to dvla back in 2001 when I bought it which I'm assuming would have shown the original date of registration in the States, wish I'd taken a copy of it. They issued it with a 1985 B registration. Funny thing is when I check the mot history on the .gov website it says it was first registered 31st December 1985 which would make it a C registration!๐ค๐

Checked the runout on my wheel rim and disks. 0.9mm and 0.18mm respectively, (both sides). I guess that's not bad for 40 year old materials. [hashtag : built to last ]

Coolant drained, (well most of it anyway) and factory impeller cover removed. Gasket area cleaned. New Athena gasket prepped with a light coat of water pump and thermostat sealant. My dear friend Evans Ward gave me this quick drain impeller cover that enables no mess draining without having to remove the bottom radiator hose. Thanks Evans!!! The cylinder drain bolts declined to be removed so I got most of the old coolant out (which looked just as good as it did when it was put in there) and added back 50/50 mix of distilled water and antifreeze plus 6 capfuls of water wetter. Hooked up my alternate fuel source and ran it up. No leaks noted.

Repaired the damaged RH barrel and replaced M8 exhaust stud. Finished wiring in the Ignitech CDI and just tidying up redundant wires. Can see the rest of this year ahead on bike improvements.
