Thought I'd start a thread on my winter project. Not mine unfortunately, belongs to rwebster off here so will be nice to do a rebuild with someone else picking up the tab. Will get some pics up of the starting point but is an 85 (C plate) 31k Lc2 with a mere 3900 miles from new. Has been crashed on RH side then stored since 1995. Nothing major, just scuffed pipe, dented tank, wrecked top fairing and clocks. Amazing condition otherwise, no rot and all original. Even barrel studs still original zinc plate with no corrosion.
Plan is to strip, powdercoat frame and swinger as the finish has gone in places then clean everything and rebuild. Not an anorak job but sympathetic restoration. Some things like forks have just the slightest marks making me think they should stay as they are and not spoil by paint or polishing. Even has original number plate from dealer it was bought from.
Paint is being sorted by a mate of Rod's so another worry I don't have.
Can't wait to get stuck in. ;D ;D

looks a nice project who was the original dealer ? I've sorted the pictures now, new format in photobucket had IMG thumbs rather than images. As you can now see it was Alan Duffus, High St Leslie so it's a Fifer. Steve

So it is not just me with photobucket, never does the same thing twice. I think the original michelin tyres may have to go, may be past their best. Steve

did they ever have a "best" ?
think duff opened up in leslie in about 1974 ,i was at the opening as my farther used to be the starter and judge at knockhill ,i remember drooling over fizzies and rd200's i bought my first lc from there ,the last one of the first batch of 350's november 81 i think FES896W duff built an extention to his showroom some time after that he used to have a demo 31k that i had out a lot ,he'd send out ian duffus on summat , usually what was probably a customers bike ,so that turned into the fife TT ,top fun

Got a few hours today so started the strip. Loads of pics during strip as everything is as it left the factory so want to make sure it goes back that way. All fasteners marked and bagged in groups. Amazingly all inexcellent condition so far and nothing seized. Compared to Lc's I'm surprised how many bolts are not olive. A lot are palain silver zinc or yellow passivate. If you look beyond the dust it's amazing the condition. got this far some of the little details should be in a museum. untouched tool kit under the seat along with the owner manual still in bag and even this on the key Steve

Rest should be a clean/service and re fit. Even found a cover on the battery that clips on to the strap on battery to cover the positive terminal. Never saw that before. Steve

That looks amazing - barely used!
Are you getting the frame powder-coated, if so what colour? Looks like RAL 3020 (Traffic Red) is close, what do you think?
Be interesting to see your dismantling pics, unfortunately I didn't do mine so it's all a bit of a jigsaw puzzle!

Not picked a colour, was just going to take it through and compare it to the sample wall. Steve

Thought it was going too well
Took the belly pan and exhausts off tonight.
Found the first problem, tie bars don't seem lined up with bottom case correctly, bolts don't seem to be at right angles to case, ran out of time so not been able to check if loose but the major thing is it has cracked the mounting plates on the frame pushing them forward. Hope it is just a case of them being loose and beating the sh1t out the frame and not the bottom case f*cked ruining the matching numbers bike
Will have a closer look in the morning

It would seem the cases, bolts and bars are all as Yam intended although I undid the bolt to frame firs and it wanted to sit 3mm higher in the mount so looks like the frame mount has been tightened first in the wrong position so when bolted to the engine it has stressed the plates.
Little bit of welding should sort them.

nearly stripped, just engine suspension and wheels left.
would appear that a mouse has taking a liking to the bike at some time. loom tape nibbled off and some wires chewed, nothing chewed through so will re tape/repair

Well that's it totally stripped, bagged/wrapped and parts for powder coating ready. Took the frame to a local engineer who welded the cracked mounts. I cut all the cracks with an angle grinder first and got him to mig up all the slots. They were cracked across the bolt holes and up the sides as well as where the joined the frame tube which had split at one side. All ground back now, just need to get a small grinding stone to clear out where the weld went through to the other side. Think the last thing I took the head bearings out that had loose balls was a pedal bike Steve

had been on the look out for a better rh pipe, it was not too badly dented/rashed but dent was at a weld so would be difficult to fill/braze and get the weld looking right.
had been watching a pair on ebay that were pick up only in the midlands with just a small dent at rear so asked for more pics and said i would have to try and get some one to collect.
turns out their son is heading to glasgow today (ended last night) so he could bring them up for me.
jammy b4st4rd time, won them for £21 ;D

Well slightly too good to be true. Good and bad news
Good news is they are in better condition than I thought.
Bad news is that the RH pipe that I actually needed is an N1/F1 pipe. Identical apart from the cut out on rear for the wider axle.
Intended trying to sort the original but not 100% confident it would look perfect so other options are either using the N1/F1 pipe as is or fill in the offending bit on the rear or see what else pops up.
Ideally need a swop of Lc2 for N1

Ignition switch was smashed in the accident so sent one to simon5 to get it matched to the original key. Got it back yesterday so another thing off the list

Hopefully be powdercoated by the time you are back, will be good to have the clocks, I like to know everything is ok, stops the distraction of me trying to solve too many things in my head at the one time. Have had a delivery from Norbo so new bars, gen grips, bar end and taper head bearings now waiting for it. Didn't see the point in fitting the old bearing as although they are fine the tapers are better and no point fitting an inferior product that cannot be seen. Also got a pattern screen but will paint in the black and already should have someone sorting the cleaning instruction decal and the 31K part number decal for it to make it look original. You will be glad the rockets have stopped ;D Steve

Dropped the frame, swing arm, centre stand, side stand, lift handle and tie bar brackets off at the powder coaters today. Delayed about a week as I was waiting for some steel plate to arrive so I could make blanks up to mask off the headstock bearing area. Not that they would not do it, I just choose to and then it's my error if something gets blasted or coated that shouldn't.
Went for red 3000 satin in the end. Very good match to the un faded areas on the frame and the satin is good as the original paint was not too high gloss which can make them look too plastic opposed to paint.
Best bit was when I asked how much she said call it £100 so happy with that. It pays to have a good relationship with them.
Strangely there was another 31k frame coated and waiting for collection marked John Melrose. Any body on here?
Should have it all back in a week and the build can begin, need to get some tyres sorted for it at some point to get it on it's wheels.
Steve.

THe best bit is when the frame is back from the coaters and you can start putting things back on. Looking good.
