Picked it up Saturday, Not been run for almost 10 years. Thought i,d try and get it started before i strip it down. removed the barrels to find the crank full of stale petrol emptied it out and give everything a good coating of 2 stroke oil. Stuck it all back together and checked for a spark..... Nothing spent the next 20 or so minuets checking wires ans scratching heads when me mate spotted the kill switch on the bars was turned off ;D Put a bit of pre mix in the tank poured a bit down the plug holes and give it a kick.. It started first kick! I was dumb founded lol here's a pic And a couple of hours later

Does it look like its bent that centre tube to you?

Post by marsbar350 on Apr 21, 2012 22:43:30 GMT 1
lookin closely it does i dont think it will make much difference.you could cut the brackets off the tube and replace.i would be inclined to repair.its what i do.you can see where the brackets have been pulled away.as i posted earlier knock them back to the tube and reweld.

Does look a little out.Might be better to weld new tube with centre stand brackets added. But on the plus side the engine started first time.

What i'm thinking is if the tube is bent would it have distorted the frame else where.

Well had a call from the powder coaters last week. I was having the frame and a few other parts done so i asked them to blast the wheels so i could get them painted. Chap phoned me up and said it was taking forever to blast the wheels and it was not really worth doing them with the cost and time it would take. They,d been powder coated a few times in the past to the it had gone like rubber and the grit just wasn't having the effect So with the nearest place to get them acid dipped being 50 miles away it would have been 200 miles buy the time i dropped the wheels off and picked them up again. anyway manged a get a pair of wheels from the Stafford show yesterday from kev still with the original paint. So spent the day doing a bit of painting. i5.photobucket.com/albums/y181/minty0_10/rd%20project/009.jpg[/IMG] Just got to get the rims and fins polished and that's one less job. I also picked up my frame and a few other parts than were ready at the powder coaters.

With most of my big parts off being coated and polished ive not had a great deal to do during the past few weeks. Witch is good because the funds have run out for the time being Been thinking the biggest expensive i have left is the tyres and paint job Tyres i can make myself ;D so i thought i,d try and save a few £100 and have a good at the paint myself. Figured out then if it went pete tong i,d cough up and go down the Kennys colours. But for know im hoping to have the end product looking something like this So the past week ive been doing a bit of painting Side panels Manged to get one flatted back mopped and polished today rather a slow progress its like watching paint dry. No it is really like watch paint dry ;D Here's the finished panel quite happy with it myself and if the rest turn out as good i,l be even happier. Final coat after mop and polished Didn't all go to plan front mudguard after the top coat Then while working the mop i burned through the paint Tomorrow im going to attack the tank

What paint are you using, Straight 2k, COB 2k, COB water base?

Nice job you're doing. I like to see people try their own painting etc, encourages me to have a go myself (would save a fortune on the number I have to do)
I'm not sure the airbox comes out that easily from memory, especially with the engine and carb bits fitted, should have fitted a replacement first I think.

What paint are you using, Straight 2k, COB 2k, COB water base? Halfords gloss black aerosol Its just a mater of putting enough paint on to be able to flat it back. Don't know whether i should lacquer on top of now. Only ever really needed to lacquer on top of metallic base coat.

Just finished the tank, Bit peed off got a few bits of air born dirt and one hair hopefully i,l be able to flat it back to get most of the crap out. Then its a case of fitting the decals (any tips) and the lacquer of the top. Not looking forward to the lacquering its a lot harder to get a good run/sag free finish compared to the paint. and i having a feeling its going to go tits up

If your using Halfords rattle cans you need to Lacquer over it or petrol will rip it straight off. Halfords sell a petrol resistant Lacquer, flat the paintwork & give it one thin coat & about 3 further thick coats 10 minutes apart. Don't worry if you get a run or it spits a bit this can be polished out after the lacquer has hardened. Whatever you do don't touch the lacquer untill it's dry or you will ruin your paint job as the lacquer actually melts into the paint when it's applied, also never try & apply more coats of lacquer after the original has dried or it pickles the whole paint job off Did this one with Halfords paint ;D

Beautiful paint work guys, am I right in believing that it's just normal primer, lots of wet and dry then top coat halfords then transfers on THEN lacquer over the whole lot???
