After such an "exhausting" time last thread. I thought I'd take a "brake" Calipers were usual for Yamaha (seized and painted with a million coats of paint) They were stripped and bagged ready for Shag to vapour blast them back to newness! Another batch of zincing and all the caliper bolts, circlips, rear master cylinder pushrod and a couple of set catch bits look lurvly! Calipers back from the Shagmeister, proper top job, a period of time in the aquablaster brought them up like new. Got them all masked up ready for the B&Q satin. Absolutely, perfect. Thanks Shag! Now with a bit of B&Q's finest! Cooked them at room temprature for 24 hours, plus a couple of sessions of chucking in the oven after cooking So, all laid out for lube and build: And mounted: Got some superb brake lines from WEZMOTO, quality is great, only snag with the swaged ends is that if they're not in-line they twist slightly. But, had them with stainless banjo's and stainless bolts, with an original-looking black sheath to imitate the original rubber crappy things. And the fronts: Going to take Gaz RD Robbo's advice and get mesen some of that new-fangled DOT 5 brake fluid as it doesn't bugger up the paint on anything. Thing is, it's bloody impossible to get hold of I don't really fancy a trip over to West Yorkshire to buy it either... Next up, engine in and bolted up. It's starting to look like a bike at last! Thanks for sticking with it! Simon

Need a few other bits anyway 'cos I'm fed up with buying 'valve bits off ebay and the parts are grossly not as described. ;D

Had another delivery, this time from the Yambits elf. Gotta keep all the elves in work ya' know... Managed to wrestle the motor onto the bench and carefuly pop it in without scratching anything Head on and torgued down, then just fitting bits and bobs, cutting SAMCO hoses down to fit nice etc.... Got me tie-bars on. Longest bolts in the world into the engine lol Put centre stand on in anticipation for it going on its wheels. Although still waiting for a rear shock rear shock located, turned my attention to buying and fitting more NOS... I decided to go for new indicators, OK, not original, but unscratched and at least I put NOS Yam plugs over the threads! Finally got a genuine clutch gasket, so bolted the clutch cover on and fitted those pesky pipe guides etc., Been waiting sooooooooooooo long to put this beauty on Even the original bolt's been chromed Put the original oil pump cover on, but it looks gash, so will be ordering a new one. "N" rad cover on with the correct hose covers. Where we're at: Next up, petrol cap stripping.... While I was at it, new nut and washer on the gearbox sprocket, topped off with a touch of red studlok Cover on: Random engine shot; no 30-year old rubber hose here, just SAMCO lol! Thanks for looking! Simon

Not had any work again this week In the meantime I thought I'd turn my attention to bike things... I won a gen fuel cap. Already got an alloy one, but no key This was good, but the key was different to the ignition one. Stripped it, cleaned it, swapped the barrel with the one from the seat lock, rebuilt and forgot to take piccies..... So now I have a matching ign and fuel, I'll keep my eye out for a correct key'd seat lock to do on my travels. Finally the shock arrived, and I was super happy when I landed a 31K black seat and original shock. Only problem was this: f**king couriers... I'd about given up on ever finding another 31K shock, and at the end of the day I could have put something else on but I wanted the adjuster to work. As lots of time comes with a lack of work, I had chance to do lots of Googling and x-referencing. I've found that a XJ600 shock appears to be the same as the (t)rusty 31K!!! Long story short, was nearly ending, sniped it and won for £9.06!!!! Not bad for a non-leaking shock! Result! Looked a bit grubby, It fitted straight into the hole, exactly the same thing as the "N" nodel ! Shaft was perfect, so have a look for them on the 'bay. Certianly not inflated prices (yet)!!! Anyway we can fix anything with a bit of Armex in the media blaster, chucked on me powdercoated spring and 20 minutes later we had this: Mounted! Waiting for my neighbour to pop round so I can get it off the bench and on its wheels. Would have got more done but got taken to Stafford and it was shite. Saw nothing and got nothing done on the bike Should be final bit of the brakes, a bit of bodywork and exhausts next installment. Just depends if your all good boys (and gurls)! Thanks for looking! Simon

Finally got it on its wheels!!!!!!!!! Ended up by being me and our lass lifting it off the workbench - which was fun with all the other bikes around. Glad I bought that old centre stand, was invaluable for slipping the front wheel in. So the eagle-eyed amonst you may have noticed that the wheels aren't black, as previously stated. They're gold: There's a good reason for that, meet Mr. Kenneth Roberts Esquire: But these bits dont fit Various brackets in the way, bottom lugs on frame stick out too far Hits indicators, would need some pretty shitty brackets making to mount this Wrong mounting, it's for the 31K and the N1 mounts on the top... It's all for sale now. Look in the For Sale section, or ebay (but it's more money on there cos of the fees) So, with a heavy heart, the bodywork I'd waited sooooo long to fit, that I'd driven soooo far to fetch - is now back up for sale. Along with the wheels This is the latest look: This has really put me back as now I've got to find a painter to get it into the right colours, and it seems in the bike trade everyone takes the piss with their timescales.... So I thought I'd have a go at this painting lark. Stickers off with the womans hairdryer... Spray booth, well shower curtain... Flatted and plastic primed flatted again then primed in white Except for this bit And I'd ran out of white spray filler Blasted it and flat it tomorrow Meanwhile, work starts on the tank: Dents. Only 5, which is incredible for a 31K tank! Although this ones a f**ker... 1st load of filler. Why oh why do I always mix up too much then blatt it all in when I know I've still got to rub it all down..... 2nd skim: Best way to make rubbing down easier. Plus only a tenner for 3 bottles at ASDA 3rd skim: Leave it to dry for the night and (hopefully) finish it off tomorrow Front mudguard's not too bad, needs a dose of looking at though, not good enough for thi build While I was witing for the filler to fill and dry, I thought I'd turn my attention to the box of NOS that will make up the headlight: Already got a NOS headlight bowl off Norbo, then won another glass and rim. I really wanted to fit the NOS stuff as I want the bike as "new" as possible. Got this little bugger in eventually. Now we've got this: I know the flash has picked up the "usedness" of the adjusters, so might see if there's a new pair in someones NOS box... Thanks for looking! Simon

nice work mate bugger about the body kit.wont have any trouble shifting that are you havin to do another KR paint job? Well, this is the thing, when I started the bike I wanted it different as I really don't like the "RD" logo on the N, so when the KR came up I bought it. Since then, the bike build's taken a different course and the build isn't just a cheap build, so I've had to keep it standard to accentuate the work that's gone into it The KR one needs the belly pan and bikini fairing, and, these don't fit the N so I'm stuck. I'd have loved to do an AKAI job, or even a Wrangler one. Maybe I'll keep me eye out for a cheap 31K ;D Just don't tell the missus Simon

Hello again. Been busy in the garage.... At least the left-hand cover looks nice... Because of the change of bodywork, so is a change of wheels... All that time and effort putting the gold wheels into service gone down the shitter. Next thing is to get the new bearings in the original wheels I painted and get the tyres on them. Now mounted in the bike: Wasn't happy with the powdered switchgear, so smoothed the originals (I think I actually sent the wrong set off as they had a blank where an electric start button would be) Quick fettle with the blaster, a coat of etch, one of primer, a couple of satin, dudicious sticker sticking and a couple of coats of lacquer and we have this: TADAAAAA! You can tell this bike is from darn sarf, its got a facking 'orn ;D Got my NOS oil cover from Kuala Lumpa, niiiiice. And got the Regina o ring on... As the sun was out today, all the toys came out for a sunbathe! The N was being a bit shy though This will be the last write-up for a week or two as waiting for bits to pop up on ebay, coupled to the fact got no work at the mo to pay for them Thanks for looking, don't be a stranger! Bit of a short episode this week, not a lot of work = not a lot of money... Got the 'zorsts back from my dad, he's done a top job! I chucked a couple of cans of B&Q barby paint (which, to be honest I think is shite) Waited 3 days for it to go off, then cut back with T-Cut. Carefully mounted them to the bike: I'll be looking at heat-resistant powder because even though they look the dogs in the pictures, it will scratch very easily Won this on the 'bay, never seen one before, I assume it was made out of an old head! Very thick! Well, that's it. Need a trip to Norbo's for somemore stuff, just waiting on the paint. Last bits I need now are: Lockset (matching keys) 31K carbs Front and rear footrests Genuine mirrors Bits to do are: Bleed brakes Gearbox oil and sump plug Find, buy, strip, clean and fit all the above stuff! And probably a million other bits as well Want it done for me Birthday. Deadline 31st May... Thanks for looking! Simon

Another really quick update, our lass came home and brought me somemore stuff that had come to her works. New fuel tap, didn't want the touchy-feely stuff to not be NOS. Even the screw is NOS Pictured at the side of the ignition switch in bits. After I altered all the barrels to work from one key, I finds out the ignition key pulls out when the ignition is on.... Might have a work-round yet, more on that next week Fitted: Rubbed-up and lacquered the front mudguard bracket in readyness for the muddy... decided to put some water in it, now its cooled: Had a couple of little leaks. Those clips on the SAMCO hoses have to be bloody tight.... Anywayz, first cover on! If anyone's got any of this lot, please get in touch! Lockset (matching keys) 31K carbs Front and rear footrests Genuine mirrors Bits to do are: Bleed brakes Gearbox oil and sump plug And probably a million other bits as well Want it done for me Birthday. Deadline 31st May... Thanks for looking! Simon

Not really a skill more of a tip. For anyone looking for a replacement sump plug for the Rd go to Halfords and get "Sump nut and washer kit HSP602" it is the correct length and comes complete with two types of washers (which are also available seperatly) one nylon and a steel one with a rubber insert (dowty type) the latter one can be used time and time again. £1.99
Taken from my own post on the A/C forum.

Hi all, Well before the long drive to the *garage* to pick up the paintwork that I've had a go at spraying, it was time to put some gearbox oil into the motor. Didn't have a sump plug, then a forum member mentioned the fact that Halfrauds do a replacement for the princely sum of £1.99... Duly fitted, although you don't want to see a picture of a sump plug fitted do ya? You mean you want me to crawl about on my bad knees, trying to take photos with my phone of a sump plug? And you want it blurry for effect?!?!?! My God, you're slave drivers So 1500mls of 75w later and she's done. Remember a while ago, when we was faced with this: Well, give it a bit of this: One of these: Resulting in this: So, just thought I'd show you all what it looked like as I slipped the panels on for a dummy run! (P.S. The bubble-wrap is to protect everything as there's 3 bikes in the garage!) Bloody fuel tap doesn't fit as well!!! Thanks for looking! Simon
