Had a look at the tank today and its worse than I thought. A few questions: Is it worth repairng? Doesd anyone know a tank repair company near Manchester? Has anyone used that company in Hartlepool, and how much did it cost? And of course does anyone have a good 31k tank they wish to sell? Thanks

Thanks for the reply
What kind of heat source for silver solder? Could you use a butane torch ?
Being tight as a ducks ass I wil look at repairs first. Guess a good tank will not be cheap!

Butane torch is good, IMPORTANT to flush the tank thoroughly to remove / reduce petrol fumes or you'll go BANG. PM Scott for details of his repair or look at his rebuild he did last year for further info. Good tanks are getting harder to find too ;D

I had a tank brazed a few years back from a local metal firm and they only charged a tenner so might be worth an ask around.

Thanks for the replies.
My dad knows a welder round the corner who is willing to have a look. Think its Mig so would that blow more holes? Problem is he makes gates which are obviously thicker metal
The tank is currently full of water and bleach, will then go with degreaser of some type. Lining after was something I was going to do.
Looking at the solder repair Scott did, the rust was worse than mine and I think iI will look at this as there is a lot to be said for learning new skills.
Thanks

Local blacksmith who is a friend of a friend tigg'ed my tank up.Did a gr8 job n didnt cost much either. Nuttybird has had 2 tanks done by the hartlepool radiator people and she couldnt sing their praises enough. Only thing is they now only offer a one yr garauntee instead of lifetime on motorcycle tanks Also dirtbag negotiated a discount for forum members

Thanks Don't try mig, Done this with a tank that one of the mounting cups had pulled off and left a hole where the tack weld was. Mig'd 3 times and still leaked. Gas welded 4 times and bloody leaked. Finally leak free with brazing so would recommend that or silver solder method. Steve.

Agreed, id introduce that rotter to the bin, its gonna be paper thin everywhere else. Will cost you big time in the future if its got a nice paintjob and you have to ruin it. Get a good solid tank now while theres a few about.

i agree with the others just stick your roton tank and sell it as it is and buy a decent one, imagin spending £300 on a paint job to find that the tank leaks like a siev 6 months later.especialy if it leaks when your 30 miles from home in the rain. i know we all like to save cash but long term i just dont think its worth repairing that tank giving that they arnt mega expensive or hard to come by.

I work near the Hartlepool radiator company which repairs tanks, i called in once before for a price for one of may many leaking 31k fuel tanks. He had several other 31k tanks in his workshop having work been done to them, he wanted £180 to repair the tank they cut the bottom out of the tank sand blast the inside of the fuel tank, weld it back up then line the fuel tank with some special fuel tank liner and then bake it in a oven till it goes off. The jobs he had done where very good but I ended up getting two very good rust free tanks off ebay for £180 and had the painted up.

id much rather a tank with a few hefty dents than a rotton one, atleast once a dent is repaired its problem cured, with rust you never know when it will return
