I am thinking of selling it on as spares/repairs but wary that my details could be raped if I do beyond removing the hard drive is there anything else I can do...bare in mind the thing wont fire-up into action as it stands ! toshiba A200-151 And for any curious smart-arse I am currently using the Daughters PC to type this T

You could always try to restore the original software at power on this should wipe the disk, alternately remove the disk and format externally.

if you have a copy of windows install disc. boot that in the cd drive and you can format from there. you have to go to install windows before you get option to format. also hold F8 just before windows starts for safe mode.

Does it have the Toshiba HHD recovery option? Hold down F8 while rebooting and you might find see a 'Repair' option on the same menu as the safe mode option. From there you might be able to restore your laptop to a previouse point in time before it went bad

Nice try all, cheers for suggestions :
It was a new battery,1 month ago and wont boot without battery in,even plugged in direct to mains Just to remind everyone....the laptop refuses to load up in ANY condition, be it safe, repair etc it simply bails out at any random time period and just sits with a blank screen with ONLY the standby light on !

Yep you need to wipe not format your hard drives if selling IMO. BIOS battery is the little watch type battery that remembers the settings, time etc for your laptop/PC. That Beep when you boot a PC is the BIOS saying I'm ok before it loads the operating sysem(XP/VISTA/7) if the battery is poked it can cause all sorts of boot issues. Well worth swapping out as they only cost peanuts. Is the fan running on the Laptop? if it's not or only just running it'll get so far then shut down as it'll get too hot.
