So have spent ages and money fixing up my 4L0 cases. Had the broken piece done by the chain welded and made good; Doy cleaned them and did a great job. Only numptir here forgot to remove the gear selector; never mind just need to replace the bearing so took the selector out then i noticed it.
Right at the back of the bottom case was a small bolt sticking out with a nut on it; what the hell is that??? looked inside the case and obviuosly somthing has broekn off (dont know what) so some genius bodger a bit of L shaped metal then drilled through the case and bolted it to hold it. WTF!!!
Dont know if this bodge will do what its supposed to be doing and dont know if it can be repaired properly. Really gutted.
If anyone has pictures of the inside offside rear of the bottom case can they post thm up so i can see what should actually be there please.
Probably means having to get another set of 4L0 cases. Right start to the new year that is!!! b*gger.

Cheers Billbot ;D Brilliant yep thats it. Its the C shaped piece on the left hand side of the second picture. Anyone any ideas what this does and what effect missing the top half of the C shape will have when running the engine

Its where the spring for the kickstart ratchet locates. Would imagine that if the repair is an old one it must have been succesfull? Post a pic and lets have a toot? The bottom half in the pic is a spare, but it may not be an exact match for your top - they were machined as a set, otherwise you could have it.

So here is the damning evidence. Others are of the repair the welder did to the top case; i thought he did a pretty good job as he had to fabricate the whole piece that goes behind the engine number and up to the top of the piece that got broken off.

Thats an easy fix, mine was exactly the same except there was no L shape bodge in there. Had the missing part built up with weld and I just fettled it out so the spring would locate back in there. HTH Cheers,Andy.

Why ohhh why do people do this sort of thing a very simple blob of weld and re-shaped is a much easier fix as stated above, the time and effort gone into that bodge is unbelievable

For anyone thats interested the guy who ally welded the top of the case that was broken off by the chain is a bloke called Edgar. He lives in Bradford and his phone number is 01274 642669. He charged me £35 to fix mine and he had to rebuild most of the left hand side so it would have been cheap at twice what he chared me.
