Reading the det repairs thread below i wondered about the marks that an exploding crank leaves behind when the big end bearings shatter all over the lower crank case void. Usually I clean them up with emery and then polish the whole lower void, but in reality would it make any difference i wonder? Would the pits and gouges really slow down air/fuel mix as it is sucked up the induction ports from the crankcase?

But you'd clean it up anyway when you had it stripped if not just for piece of mind !!!!!!!!!!!

Well, yes... and I do... but often you buy an engine/bike thats been built and its not been done, so im assuming mechanics / other builders dont bother, so maybe the damage isnt restrictive to performance, hence my question...

Thanks Gary, I think i probably over polish to be honest. My view is that 'the slippier the better' (we are talking about engines... er...), so anything thats a possible restriction will get work, but I do wonder how much difference things like this make. I guess if you had lots of little lumps and bumps and didnt do them, then it would add up, but generally perhaps not the odd one or two. Id be interested to see inside one of Stan's or a TSS engine after Wobbly has done it and see what they do. hmm...
