Had a play with the carbs today ,152 main jet ,jjh needle on middle position ,having problems getting off the line now ,it wants to stall just after idle when taking off but once through it clears its throat and is away ok ,would playing with needle position cure this as either side of this its pretty good now

I have mine on 42 pilot, air screw 1 1/2 turns out, 160 mains, JJH needle on middle clip with gibsons & foam pod filters
Mine goes like the clappers from the off but runs out of steam on the top end.
On 142 you may be running a bit lean if the needle is on the middle clip

I started on 150 mains and the dam thing was always on the verge of seizing cos it was running too lean. I think 160s are too big as mine's running too rich & I've lost the top end, Martin also found this when he did a dyno run.

one of the best things about Keihins is that they are VERY tolerant of jettings "close' is usually all they need. To have palpable issues, these need to be wayyy off . I'd give thought to the stock airbox likely you will have an easier time of it and perf Will go up.. certainly on a street rider. Mine are on 40's 130's and jjh on mid clip using premix. Plug chop shows a genuinely rich mix. It revs to 11 k (accidentally :-) perfectly. but with rev limiter @10,5k there is no stumble or missing.. ever . But 10.5 (used err.. often per ride) is proving to be genuinely bad for the rotating bits, so I'm being forced to rethink that .

Tried needle on 5th position and it has improved the taking off but seems awful rich between 4-5500 once in powerband it flies ,exhausts are slightly damp at the ends

After my latest dyno run I am now on the same settings as bare (130 mains) AND it is still slightly rich. 152 seems huge to me and I'm nearly getting nearly 70RWHP.

Hello,
Tobster - this thread is also running on the RD site. I've been putting my experiences on there.
What is your set up - ie tune pipes etc
I'm using a Zeel with 31k curve , Kennnys pipes , Modded airbox and hi-flow filter - fibre reeds and Iridium plugs .
Was using 40 pilot, JJH needle 2nd clip down and 125 mains and it went very well - backside dyno mind.
Tried 38 pilot but it's to weak -spoilt it .
Might try N68A needle which is from KR1 carb this weekend and see what it's like.

hi masterbill I believe the JJH needle and N68A are the same as is the N99E and 66X. I have not needed to change my pilot jet or needle clip postion from stock and have just been using progresively smaller mains. Re my set up, all standard tuning and bits - M Abbey port, skimmed head, Zeeltronic, original Jim Lomas (Stan Stevens) pipes, modified airbox (no snorkel or partition plus drilled lid). Runs very well in this format even with BR8ES plugs.

Hello,
Nikfubar - What is your tune? Could it be that you are getting so much petrol in that you are washing away the oil ?
What's you fuel comspution like ?
tobster - hello mate
using the 2 sites is hard work !!
Tried the smaller pilot and it spoilt it - as it's esay changing needle I will try N68A for the sake of it .
I haven't put any holes in the lid yet, but I was thinking about it _ i wondered if It needs more to be sucked in, got a spare lid might give it a try.
Cheers

Hello, Nikfubar - What is your tune? Could it be that you are getting so much petrol in that you are washing away the oil ? What's you fuel comspution like ? Don't think it can be that as I've fitted even bigger jets so more fuel / air & it's no longer on the verge of seizing. My point is there is such a massive variation in main jet sizes that people use, from 125 to 160 how are we to get it right apart from trial & error. I maybe that I needed bigger jets cos I'm using foam pod filters so very little resistance there.

Hello,
Ah foam filters which I know nothing about. As you say trial and error.

Yes M8 ;D adjusted the pump so the long mark lines up at WOT to give a bit more oil.
