im new to 4 stroke bikes, ive only had one and that was a field bike as a kid out of the 20 odd bikes ive owned so im just looking for some advice please lads. basicly im thinking of buying a 4 stroke over this winter for the longer ride outs as my poor old f2 isnt realy suited to keeping up with my mates modern 600's and i feel guilty riding it too hard sometimes. im only going to have £2500 max to spend and i need something modern (ish) 1995 onwards, cheap and easy to maintain, cheap(ish)insurance, easy to fix and find parts for, reliable and not too big as i havent got the biggest shed to store it. my thoughts are so far. 1-r6 2-cbr600f 3-bandit1200 (as the 600's seem slow) i know it sounds like im asking for the moon on a stick but any advice on good or troublesome 4 strokes would be nice. ps the f2 wont be for sale but may go into storage for a bit

I have had 2 r6, a cbr600 and a fazer1000 and all were excellent bikes. The cbr is seen as an all rounder does exactly what it says on the can, some would say boring, i wouldnt. The r6 was the dogs bollox for me, only gave up riding due to neck and back injury, but what a bike. Fazer, again, great all rounder, i exchanged mine back to the r6. As with all of these look for raced or crashed examples and avoid. You can get a lot of bike for 2500 spondoolies, good luck with it.

i do like the look of the them yzf's and ninja's, if i was to get a ninja id prefer the zx9r with the twin front lights 1998ish.soo many options.......
being only small i might be more suited to some bike i suppose (5ft 7 and 60kg)

twostroker if your thinking of a r6 cant recommend them enough! have a early model one for years and never had any bother with it, there easy to work on light and nimble and go like hell, also as scoobysal says the cb6 is a great bike and good all rounder with typical honda reliability! both are fantastic bikes!

tbh a early red/white r6 would be ideal as it will match my leathers and helmet aswell,i was just a bit scared of buying anything that will cause me too much grief or too fragile for me.its looking more and more like r6 its going to be

Red and white r6 is like rocking horse shite, loads of blue ones about. Good luck with it and let us know what you decide on, even though it sounds like the lush r6. R1 is lush too but insurance hike may be the killer on that one.

Go for a pre 1997 fireblade, absolute legend bike, easy to get hold of parts, (David Silva spares), rev it to death and it will just want more, fast as you like and easy to ride unlike 600's that require abit more work to get going i think. I got the 1996 RRT and its a great bike, with possible future classic status much like the first generation R1. You could pick up a great blade for 2.5K.

know what you mean about the wrist pain, i broke mine in 2007 and sold the r6 afterwards as couldnt ride for more than an hour. Loved thrashing it though, the sound of that engine.

I had an RSVR a couple of years ago and what a machine . With the lighweight wheels and quality suspension they are like a modern 600 to turn and throw around but they are seriously lacking in power compared to modern 1000. Mine had the "Racing" exhaust and accompanying chip but I had a GSXR1000 (which I still have) and it was so slow compared (at any revs). I sold it in the end cos I was dissapointed everytime I opened the throttle but I do wish I hadn't sold it...... it was lovely
