Hello. I've got a french import rd125lc MK1. It's got a MK2 ypvs engine in it, but power valve has no cables to it. Basically it's a pig to start. Runs ok, once it's started but not actually ridden it yet, as I've been going through it as it looked like it had been off the road for quite a few years. Choke mechanism on carb pulls in and out, but not sure if it's doing anything inside the carb. Is there a way of checking without taking the carb off? I had the carb off when I first got it, and cleaned it out etc. Haven't had an rd for nearly 40 years and I'm a bit rusty on the inside and outside of them.

Hi Welcome to the forum. Did you get the carb ultrasonically cleaned ? That is the best way to clean carbs, and can often take a few goes to shift stubborn muck and varnish. If It's stood for years with fuel in the carb then I would revisit it it and get it spotless, otherwise it's gonna keep rearing it's head. Also, removing the large brass ball that sits at the 6 o clock position of the carb on the airbox side allows proper cleaning of the small passageway behind it which often clogs up and causes issues. Loads of info on this forum regards "balls out", the search function is your friend Norbo has an online shop - look at the top of the main page for a link. He sells a pair of Pv cables for 30 quid Good luck, and enjoy the forum

Hello Thanks for replying. I'll definitely get the carb off again. I cleaned it with carb cleaner but I have heard ultrasonic cleaning is much better. I'm looking forward to actually riding , but need to start with the cold starting problem, then it should be ready to go.

Also forgot to add, the cables for the power valve are quite easy to get, but I also need the servo motor. I've got the controller and wiring. Where could I get a servo motor from? I think the early tzr 125 used the same system.

The starter jet sits in the float bowl and gets sometimes blocked, because it is at the bottom, where all the dirt resides. So you just have to loosen the clamps, the oil hose and the top with the throttle cable. Turn the carburetor and remove the float chamber. You will see a channel with a little brass thingy at the bottom (not removabel). This little hole is likely blocked.

The servo motor can be virtually any Yamaha servo, even 4 stroke EXUP exhaust valve servos work as powervalve motors. but you will also need the controller, RD125LC's had a separate controller, you will need this or you will need an Ignitech CDI or similar with controller built in, or lastly one of the quite rare servo motors with controller built in (3 wires not the standard 5 on the servo)
