Evening men. Been giving the F2 carbs a goin over today. Main reason was to check the balance of them. Set throttle stop screws.....then fitted them and adjusted cables to set the dimples in the windows....then used lolly stick method. And here is the question......after doin this.....the two dimples are not exactly in the windows.....one bit higher than the other But according to lolly sticks are dipping at same time.Is this right? Anyone else found this?

Hi mate, strangely enough i did mine tonight, the lolly stick method is about as accurate as i could get although i used some 10mm alloy hollow tubing. when i was sure they were rising at the same time i checked them by opening the throttle and listening for a single or the dreaded DOUBLE click as i dropped the slides. I heard a double click which told me they were not syncronized. (i find it difficult to see if they are exactly rising together due to the angle they have to be viewed at) so adjusted them again using a fixed point on the motor (a bit like checking for TDC with a degree wheel) ie: make two simple brackets, fix them to a place near the carb intake then measure distance from stick/tube when they rise to fixed point. got them spot on doing this. Finally checked them with vacuum guages and totally spot on. A bit long winded approach, but very accurate. Good luck with it mate.

Which part of the carbs do you connect vacume guages to?The one that would go to fuel tap, or as in my hybrid, the blanked off one

The vacuum guages mount on the carb intake stubb using rubber adapters (air box taken out). they are direct 'flow through' guages used for measuring cfm flow at any given throttle opening, so with the motor running, watch the guages, adjust as required and when they read the same they are synchronized. ;D

They've been around for decades, used them many times when i had 40s on my mk1 rs 2000, you just use the correct rubber cone for the carb intake then connect the guage to the cone and fire it up. They look like a hollow taper with a rolling calibrated guage inside a clear barrel on the end, the thing is that they should not be used for accurate measurement of air flow (even though they were advertised as such) as they cannot be calibrated but they will read identically, a bit like having a duff torque wrench, (it may be reading wrong but it will be consistantly wrong across all bolts) so if used as a calibration device and NOT a measuring device, it's invaluable. ;D
