Just after some advice.. you probably seen I went OTT with the three bond and decided to rip cylinders off again to do base gasket (glad I did).
So using new OEM base gaskets I have got some spray Hylomar M (non setting stuff appears to be all that's about). Thinking best to spray a thin layer of this on than using the grey three bond that quite thick or best to put a very think smear of three bond?
Thanks

I use the spray hylomar, it's very good at sealing and comes apart easily when/if the time comes to dismantle in the future. Threebond is for metal to metal faces, not as a paper gasket dressing.

Thanks. Only reason was told main problem are for leak is the rear of the cylinder waterways so wanted to be 100%

I've never used anything on OE or Athena gaskets.

Never use anything on the base other than a gasket. Last time I used 0.8mm gaskets from 4l04ever on here. My squish was 0.9mm and I wanted to raise it slightly by using a slightly thicker base gasket. Anyway I digress. His gaskets are a perfect alternative to oem.

I put a thin smear of grease on the base gaskets to allow easy removal in the future.

I put them on dry precisely because I do want the gasket surface to bond with case and barrel … it’s a good seal we are looking for after all! But for general applications it’s more of a personal preference what you do … most important at our age is that you can sleep well afterwards…. Don’t want to be pacing the house at 3.30am worrying if you should have done this or that !

The clue is in the name; gasket. A gasket on its own is the all round package, fit for purpose out of the bag/box.
I have used sealant on damaged gaskets, but that was a long time ago.

A leak-down test will prove all your gaskets are good :-) No guessing and no stressing!
