head stud and base another drama

Ok another drama but all my doing not sure if to sort of TBH too late now. 100% my error rushing my help someone to not do the same

Issues:-

1) Forgot to put some grease or copper on the head studs!!! I expect they will have a bit from last build... Is it ok to remove bolts and re-torque not sure if I want to risk disturbing the gasket etc. assume I would have to release them all and perhaps base bolts

2) I torqued the head down to then the cylinder base. Unless I missed it in the Hayes manual as it only said torque cylinder base in stages I did not tighten to the Yam book sequence !! found this after.. As I only could get torque wrench on one bold rest by hand but I did sort of do a cross pattern on each cylinder

Whats thoughts around cylinder nuts Should I undo and redo or leave it now as its really too late?

Head I torqued to 18ftlb think these need to be 20?

Correct the head bolts stud grease or again leave it might have a bit on more risk disturbing the gasket and block.

Head studs dry, nothing on them

If you tightened the head bolts first in the correct pattern then did the base studs in diagonals I would not worry

Technically you should have done it in 2 or 3 stages

If you have done the head correct If you are concerned you could undo the base nuts in reverse sequence then redo in stages

If head and base done incorrectly undo and starts again

Bike has not been run or disassembled so gaskets should be fine

Just don't disturb anything

Thanks for the feedback Steve, so good on the head bolts... I did the head in about 3 stages as book and to the number sequence upto 18ftlb think I need to go to 20 .

Base was done in a few stages, bit difficult having no torque wrench to fit and my adaptor I bought could not get into all of them, Haynes manual says in 2.5ftlb increments which I thought was crazy but ended up about 5 stages.

Put some 3 bond on the base (regret now) would like to back off base studs and tighten in the correct sequence to make 100% sure but concern if this will compromise the 3 bond seal and cause an issue where its ok..

When backing the nuts off. You don't have to back them off all the way.
Just back off a little then tighten how you like again.

DONT WORRY about loosening one more than the other the cylinders will beat seated in position. Small differences will be taken up with the first torque sequence.


To be honest you don't need to back them off.

The three bond will be fine unless you lift the barrels.

thanks really appreciate the feedback... perhaps I worrying about nothing here and knowing how things have gone best to just leave it as is... Assume main risk would be the head which I did to book if not more careful.. keep thinking its pulled the cylinders odd to the head...

One thing at the back of my mind was putting a rule across the barrels I had a slight high spot in the middle. this was before any bolting down. I am hoping the head pulled them in place as the cylinder nuts were just finger tight. barrels were fine before strip down no leaks or issues. This was part of the 3 bond decision to take any play....

Worst case assume it will fail on the leak down test? probably another reason to leave as is and see... this motor is driving me insane....
