Get a hot cam, a 1380 conversion and twin SUs. The power is amazing in what is essentially a go-kart! Mine had 108bhp at the front wheels.

Love the Mini! Its hard not to drive a mini hard and not smile... well, yeah, grimace at the bumps, but enjoy the steering!
