Did I hear it’s best to use an old school mineral oil for the gearbox as it’s better for preventing clutch slip?

OEB There are some excellent gear oils around. As long as it's that spec. then mineral or synthetic will both work perfectly. MA2 is for wet clutches. 👍

You could use one of the dedicated light gear oils made for the job. Don't be put off that it's probably 75/80 weight. It's equivalent to a 10/40 engine oil. Gear oils are measured on a different scale to engine oils, that's all.

As the clutches in our bikes are generally 99.999% wet, then it’s advisable not to use any oil that has friction modifiers in it as your clutch will slip, like most multigrades for cars
The same oil has to lubricate the crank and gear box, the gear box is the primary source of oil degradation due to the shearing of the oil on the gear cogs, that same oil also has to lubricate the crank which has different effects on the oil
It probably doesn’t matter what brand you use as long as you understand it’s correct usage
Lots of discussion of the best oil to use is on here somewhere
For that reason I’ll keep the oil I use nit

Just to be clear, on the LC the gear oil lubricates only the r/h main bearing on the crank, as well as all the other gearbox parts. 👍

I always use Comma Eurolite engine oil. Tested in racing ZX10R engines with no clutch slip.
Also, make sure you put at least 1.7 litres of oil in a new engine build. You can get issues with overheated 6th gear if too low.
