Interesting and very good question.
I dont have an answer... as we didnt get the early bikes in Aus, but I would think so and would also be interested to hear from early bike owners.
Of course it could have been discovered later that water gets on the coil and causes running issues and the addition coincided with the changes in carbs/pipes/tiebars etc. The LC wasnt exactly a finished product when it arrived in dealers lol
What i can say is that we have them here in Aus, so its not a cold/wet climate thing - I believe all markets got em. Tho there are areas of Aus that are cold n wet, its not the UK's weather etc.
The Japanese market 1981 parts list has em, but i cant find an earlier parts list sadly to check. Maybe someone has one?
As an aside; There is also the mystery of when the alloy and plastic offset fuel caps were part of the spec, It makes sense that the first ones of those were alloy and later became plastic, but evidence Ive seen points to it being the other way round... or a mixture, ie whatever Yam had in stock etc. weird... and hard to tie down. Maybe this will also be like that?

Unless the 1980 frame was different, ie without the screw holes for the coil cover mounting, then surely the cover would have been provided, as how would they have known that a cover may be needed later.

I have a very early German 250 frame. It would have been V reg if registered in the UK so 1979? Ill have a look at it when I get a minute. It's had a few lugs cut off in the past but but I wouldn't think they would remove that one.

The last 250lc I sold was a German import 1980 10025 I think was number, so very early also, that was V reg when registered here in the UK, and I do remember that it had a coil cover.

I think we can conclude from these answers that they all should have a coil cover or rather that they were all fitted with one from new . I removed the brackets for the cover from one of my 4L0 frames to fit the PV servo in there. I'm hoping that eventually the coil cover I took off will be found kicking around in the garage somewhere to put on my new build otherwise it's a big expense getting a replacement.

Agreed Steve. Answer : They all had one.
I do wonder how many people had issues with a removed coil cover, especially in the UK's liquid sunshine.
