Got sidetracked today after postie dropped something off. I've a forthcoming need to change the engine mount bushes on the next engine build and have been trying to devise a cunning plan to support the castings they go into so I don't break them off (this would make for a very disappointing day...). Anyway, I've adapted a car brake caliper piston push back tool which will hopefully provide the support required. It's primarily for the rear ones as the front has a bracing piece cast into the casing anyway, but it looks like it should provide some extra support for that too. My intention is to make up another tool from M10x1.25 threaded bar to steadily wind them in. I went with 1.25 pitch over the regular 1.5 as it should wind them in at a slower rate.

I've always thought about hole sawing the rubber section out then carefully junior hacksaw the outer bush, as you would with the exhaust mounting bushes? Andy.

Finished, painted and re-assembled with a smear of grease on the thread and sliding pin.

Excuse my ignorance, however, how does the tool put the bushes in ?
I’m presuming it presses them in from the inside of the mounts ?
Great idea to stop the mounts breaking, the only bit I’m worried about is that there is no support for the outside of the mount castings to stop them breaking off in event of a bush not quite going in straight or if it’s really tight
I’d like to see some sort of clamp that presses the mounts inwards or at least holds them in situ to balance the push outwards, if that makes sense

⬆️ Yep, another tool will be made to press them in from the outside. All will become clear in time, but it'll be a while as I've other stuff to get done first. The tool made is indeed intended to act as a brace for the mounts cast into the upper crankcase while new bushes are pressed in.

Well, I got the opportunity to try out my home made Heath Robinson tools today, it all seemed to work rather well.
