I mentioned in my Drayton B40 post in the Diesel section about my next Pre-65 Trials bike build and I have now finally received the frame and a few other bits.. I'll document the build here as this is the place for the details and reciprocal advice I reckon, but if Admin want to move it that's also fine.
The concept of this bike is to make what I think for me is the optimum Pre-65 trials weapon that I can & that I can use for years to come. My B40 is a proper thumper, but it's relatively heavy hence why I'm building a lighter bike. The Bantam motor is in fact a very flexible and torquey unit if put together right & the frame is designed by trials engineering guru Alan Whitton who I'm getting to know quite well now. The frame and tank are fabricated by Derby Road & Race (Paul Ridgard www.derbyroadandrace.co.uk/) & having received it I can see the quality of the workmanship is just exquisite with the lovely brazing and ally tank construction. I plan to clear ceramic coat it at once it's built and prior to riding.
The only parts of this bike that are actually Pre-65 will be a few engine components, but that's how the Britshock scene is nowadays. Wheels are Alan Whitton hubs with tubeless rear rim and a TLR front rim as it's a bit narrower/lighter for the Bantam. Forks are top quality REH that I have been using for a while now on my Drayton B40 & they are superb with rear shocks being Betor units. Yokes are again Alan Whitton & I need to machine a 1.5 degree off set into the stem mount to rake the front out a bit. Titanium foot rests, titanium fixings, etc etc - you get the picture.
Motor is a BSA Bantam D14/4 (4 speed) that will have trials gearing & I've a new heavier crank assembly that I collected this week, original untouched c.1970 BSA factory castings for the head/barrel that need sleeving & machining, Amal MK1 carb, custom air box & exhaust, custom control cables that I'll make etc.
I'm in no rush to complete this, so aiming at riding it next year & the bike will be Scottish Pre-65 compliant which I also need to register along the way.
Here's a pic of another similar build to give you an idea of the end goal, plus where I am today with a heap of bits!
Onwards & upwards..
