How many? lol.
Done that mod 2 or 3 times and always improved getting neutral, certainly worth doing.

I did this mod once, and didn’t like it. I can confirm it does change things. Stupidly I did it to an unknown engine I was building. I can confirm when it was replaced with a standard one that it had no problem selecting neutral. It made the gearbox so sensitive, sometimes it would jump out of gear into neutral if you gave it the beans in first.

Pardon my ignorance, what is the actual modification that was performed ?

5 of the points on the shift star have been rounded so they are not so pointy...

Jon Did you try a new spring on the stopper arm, as it sounds like it was not being pushed into the star hard enough?

I really think this mod depends on whether it’s needed to try and help other issues. Standard setup worked fine for me. Jon

No. Just did the shift star mod. Standard setup worked for me just fine.

I think you can do this mod one of two ways. Either use a weaker spring or a more rounded star. Both have the same effect of making it easier to rotate the gear selector drum. If you have a weak spring and a rounded star it is probably not held in gear enough so best to have one or the other.
If you look back at an Air cooled RD shift star, they were more rounded.

Before and after pic So the one at 11 o’clock is left alone?

The peak that is left unmodified is between 6th and 1st gear so you should never go over that peak. The gears are selected when the stopper arm is in one of the dips. Neutral is when the stopper arm is in the groove at the top of the peak at 9'o'clock.
