I am planning to go and look at an RD250LC that has been converted to a 350LC. Its a Red one, maybe known to this forum ? Being that unusual colour. I was after a white and red like my original 250LC in 1981. However its close, so have planned to have a look. Things that concern me are things like aftermarket fuel tanks etc. That I might not be able to detect and buy a pattern part LC which would be very disappointing. Obviously some parts will have been replaced over the years but the major parts I would like to be "real"
So any hints and tips on looking at an LC would be appreciated ( 42 years since I last kickstarted mine !)

The best advice is to read around as much on here as you can, there is quite a lot of advice about fuel tanks and general buying info like what to look at.
Put some pics on here or the ebay etc link. We'll chip in.

Welcome along.
Take heaps of pics & post on Tapatalk for quick feedback from the masses here.
There are sometimes simply no other options than to replace with aftermarket parts due to availabilty of OE stuff. Some is better than others & Norbo's shop on teh top banner is the place to start!
Good luck.

The Hi Level petrol tanks are no concern, many of us have them and they are near perfect
Indian tanks are another story and should be avoided like the plague. Obvious to spot as they are shocking in both shape and construction

Sharper lines on a Hi Level tank, but otherwise an excellent copy and they grace many awesome Lc's. Finding a good original with no rust and filler wont be easy - they are all 40 years old minimum now.

Comes down to money if it's reasonable money parts can be replaced, you are obviously not bothered about it once being a 250 and now a rd350 which wouldn't bother me if the the bike is £4-5k

I've bought an aftermarket tank, panels and tailpiece for mine, already painted. I do have a couple of genuine ones to compare it with if I could be bothered but I'll take the guys on here's word for it that they are good. If they say they are good then that's good enough for me. I think you'd have to be registered blind not to notice the Indian ones . The tail and panels feel a bit heavier and more substantial than I remember them but again I've not bothered to compare them. I know genuine mirrors get changed and I have also have a pattern gear change for mine. I don't think genuine new ones are an option now anyway. Other stuff I can think of off the top of my head are footrest rubbers, front and back and handlebar grips. I bought NOS because they were available and not too expensive. Yamaha throttle cable as well as I've had bad experiences with pattern. That was expensive though. As far as a shock goes then I'd rather have the brand new YSS which I have than a tatty original. I may just try to tart up one of the originals just for the sake of it though. You definitely want original factory fitted Yokahama tyres on it though, non of these pattern ones

Japanese model colour scheme. As above if it isn’t exactly what you want wait the right one will come up. Bikes are not selling like they were neither price or as quickly. It’s definitely a buyers market and I think you’ll find the right bike if you’re prepared to have a little patience.

I’ll be the controversial one, each to their own etc etc but IMHO:
It’s a mongrel. Non standard colours and Frankenstein mechanics.
Hold fire until one you really want turns up as it surely will.

I am taking all the advice seriously and the general consensus is its far to expensive for what it is. I won't be buying it at that price. 5 to 5.5 might tempt me but don't think that we sit well with seller. I will go and get familiar with tbe type again and look only! I have arranged to go and don't like letting people down when I say I will be there

Ask about any records/evidence of engine rebuilds, rebores etc.

I have arranged to go and don't like letting people down when I say I will be there Going and taking a look is a good idea… but just to familiarise yourself again with these bikes. There are so many small details that need to be right for a bike to command top money. In a buyers market the price drop off is steep when you move away from that. It sounds like you have good budget for the right bike, you might be surprised what would become available if you put a wanted ad on here…particularly if your search net included 250’s..
