A few more photos of the finished piece. The only thing I'm unsure about is the textured surface at the top, which is transferred from the build plate. Colin Looks fab, how much for a 350 one black?

[quote author=" urbantangleweed" Looks fab, how much for a 350 one black?[/quote] I've produced some test pieces in black already, but am still undecided whether it's something I'd be happy to take people's money for. I'm working through some physical issues of the material with Darren, and am probably on around my 20th test print. As an example we've worked out it needs printing at 100.25% of design size to allow for material shrinkage as it cools. The main issue currently is a slight problem with warping due to cooling on the bigger overhangs, leaving a small misalignment with the lower front edge of the crankcase. You can see it more clearly in the photos with the engineers square comparing one printed flat, which looks awful, and the vertical one. I'm trying a slightly different print orientation and some sacrificial internal supports to try and mitigate the issue. If I can solve the issues I was thinking of pricing them at £20 posted, assuming I can keep the print failure numbers low. Colin

If you get to the point you're happy enough with them to sell them Colin, I'll have one in black.
One other thing, the material you'll print them in, is it paintable?

Colin OK, well put me down for 2 x 350 in black, then if I mess one up trying to sand and paint it, I'll still have a good one!

Nice job, I might have a crack at printing one in PETG, it's good for 85°C.

Out of interest how did you model it. Did you scan an original and then modify?
Just about to invest in a new resin printer.

I do have a 3D scanner, but in this case I don't have the original cover on my bike as I run premix. I'm currently trying to reverse engineer the mesh in Fusion 360 to see if I can correct the issues. If it is cooling/warping causing the issues with the FDM print, then maybe a resin printer is the answer in this case? What resin printer are you looking to invest in? It's something I've never considered. What are the options like for higher temperate resistant resin print materials? Colin

The Saturn has a bigger build capacity, but the Mars has a better resolution with regard pixel size. Lots of reviewers say you cant really see the difference in the prints, so will probably just go for the Saturn, as you never know when you may need the extra size. Mainly will be using it for parts for model kits. First thing after calibration will be to print the parts for an Apollo lunar lander in 1/24 scale. For high temperature you could use Phrozen Ultra High Temp resin, heat deflection up to 190C. Its not cheap resin at £60 a bottle, but they do 120C resin for half the price.

Just had a look at both of those models and they're a lot cheaper than I was expecting. For some reason I thought resin machines would be more expensive than FDM? Or is it the consumables that are expensive? Do you already have a resin printer and are upgrading? Colin

Sold my last resin printer a couple of years ago, so this next one will be a lot better than the old one I use to have.
Consumables add up compared to FDM. Good quality resin can cost quite a bit and then you need to buy IPA to wash with. You can get water washable resins, some hate them others love them. Once washed you then need to UV cure the resin. so on top of the printer you may need to buy a wash and cure setup, £100 - £180 depending on size. Last time I bought a bucket and fitted UV led strip inside it for curing, and had a small battery turntable to sit the print on. I will probably buy the Elegoo max wash and cure station this time around.

About time I updated everyone on this one. After many attempted fixes I never managed to completely eliminate an issue with the print. As you can see from the images below there is still a small alignment issue with the front lower edge of the cover. I've taken a close up shot with a straight edge on the engine case to highlight it. It's probably only really going to be noticed if the bike is up on a lift or you've just been run over by it I've ummed and ahhed over whether to offer these to forum members, but if you're still happy to take them then then I'll print them. Bottom photo is of a couple I've done for Darren. Colin
