When I was rescuing my RD250 last year, I was running short of room plus my stash was running dry, so I decided to release some funds by selling my Honda C90. It went to a mate of a mate in the GPz900 club who wanted it for a Lands End to John O Groats run: It carried me around the NC500 from Bolton plus many other trips including the MGP so thought it would be ideal. Got good money for it too… As soon as I loaded it into the blokes van I started to have second thoughts, and have regretted it ever since. So its time for another cub!! Trouble is, they are comedy expensive so I have been waiting for something to come along for months. Enter a Yamaha V80 autolube on ebay, bought for £300 with a box of bits from a guy who had started a custom cub type project and given up. What could possibly go wrong: a 2 stroke step through combining both my loves in a single package…….. My FPO commented – “you need your bumps feeling” The bummer is he has chopped the rear muddie (which is part of the frame) and he chucked the offcut years ago plus obviously other stuff missing. I think the easiest route is to fit a C90 plastic rear mudguard and a C90 front too. Nobody would know… Leg shields are available repro on ebay and I have a set of cub chain cases – all I really need otherwise is a set of handlebar covers. Or do I custom Cub it!?? Then I found out that the 80cc 2 stroke motors are ‘in demand’ and probably worth more than the bike so do I sell that and fit a Lifan 125 four stroke like my own cub had? Any thoughts or ideas from the masses?

If its nippy enough I'd keep it as a two stroke to be different
If its going to be too sluggish then stick a new 125 4 stroke in it
I'm a hybrid fan but I don't like when stuff looks nothing like what it actually is
Nice alloy wider rims and a spannie appeal to me

When I was an apprentice in the mid 80's a colleague was a scooter boy. His ride of choice was a seriously cut down & modified Lambretta.
Keep it 2 stroke for sure & less is more, but it needs a proper spannie on it for sure!!

Three botts in a row, bingo. My first bike was a V50 hand me down, started looking for another of this type too, but stupid prices as you say. Really don't need another project though. Good luck with what you decide.

A bit of clear Lacquer and a spanny, polish the rims and get it running spot on ….. bit of porting maybe and run as it is….what a hoot.

Thoughts...I won't print my initial one but on closer inspection...different forks, fatter rims, extend the rear swinger, keep it 2 stroke, funky spannie and no leg guards at all!

Thanks for all the comments and ideas. I reckon it has to have leg shields to keep its identity as a step through and it will be used for green laning next time I go to the Isle of Man so maybe keep standard size wheels but fit semi knobbly tyres? Liking the idea of a spannie and keeping it two stroke too, so if anyone has a moped type of pipe that could be made to fit let me know?

Its the townmate T80 thats shaft drive - they are four stroke too . Ah ha…. Everyday is a school day. Townmates are really popular in Lesvos (Greece), locals have them still, as the shaft drive doesn’t need adjustment. They also have chappies and cubs all fitted with Lifan 110’s V80/90/75/50’s seem to be popular with the kids in Asia and they tune the nuts off them 😂

Thanks to markrd250lc I now have an expansion chamber on its way for the V80!
Great this forum, as it should be, about helping each other out, not profiteering.

I’d love to do this, where I stay in IoM there is an abandoned C90 previously owned by an American ex racer every time I’m there I keep trying to persuade the landlady to sell it to me. Love the idea of knobblies, either a street scrambler or a Paris Dakar step through 👍

I used to green lane on a dr400e it was the most fun I’ve ever had on 2 wheels so I loved that vid. What came across was just how much fun you were both having. Who needs more than a c90 to have a giggle. Totally cool 👍

Unfortunately, I just couldnt feel the love for the V80 so I sold it on a couple of weeks ago. Parts are difficult to come by to the point that I was struggling to get a set of handlebar cowls and mudguard etc. If........ a C90 was to come up at the right money I would probably have it, but I'm hardly desperate. Out of the 6 of us that initially bought them for the North Coast 500 trip, there is now only 1 left and thats been wedged into a shed for the last 4 years or more. I am now looking at a Fazer 1000, had one 2004-2008 and wish I'd never sold it. I use a Fazer 600 for work and its brilliant. If i can get / make a good one then i will possibly sell the tracer 9GT and go 'full classic'
