I purchased my RD250LC in January 1982 for £999, I found an app that translates what the same bike would cost in today's money. The answer is £4,515.45 at a 1982 cost of £1,000. This is the same bike I have today 40 years on and I am still the original owner.
Interesting compared to what these bikes seem to be selling for on the market today. I remember when Padgetts were selling them new in crates some time ago for £1695!! and that was long after they had ceased full production.
I don't know what a 350LC was going for in 1982 but i seem to think it was £1100 plus, does anyone know.

The nearest equivalent Yamaha, the R3 costs about £6,405.00 today, so looks like bikes cost more now than then even allowing for inflation.

If I remember correctly my new 4L0 from Team Ham Yam was £1147 in 1983, they where selling off the old stock cheap, still got the receipt somewhere. My local Yam dealer told me that was below cost, he wasn`t happy about them flogging loads then going bust. It arrived on a dark November night on a trailer. Delivery guy first parked a PV on my drive, swapped it for the Black 3 striper when I pointed out his mistake. He then handed me the keys, said docs and manual are under the seat, and scarpered, leaving 18 year old me to puzzle out how to get the seat off. 4 years of abusing that one , lots of wheelies, learn how to race and general bad behaviour. Gearbox bearing failed and pushed out the oil seal, liberally lubing the back tyre leading to a few scary slides before I realised. Left it outside the front door on my parents drive with a big drip pan under it overnight , thinking no one would take it as it was clearly poorly. It was gone in the morning

Did you ever get it back? I remember when a lot of LC's were being regularly stolen at one time when they were a lot newer. My first ride on one was on a neighbour's, then new, LC. After that, I went out and purchased one for production racing (250) used it for a few years, and then put it back to standard.
Just ridden mine in the last two days after it had been standing for a few years and it goes just as well as it ever did. Glad mine is now classed as historic as I am in what will be the extended ULEZ zone next week.

It was stolen once before from the workshop behind my parents place, the thief pulled out from the drive with no lights on in front of a cop car. Dual carriageway 100 yards down the road , shortly onto that it seized , it only had a few miles on a rebore. Thief dumped it in the bushes and legged it, according to cops. Can`t remember what I did about the seizure, don`t think it suffered much. Second time it was presumably loaded into a van, never seen again.

They produced a huge amount of LC for all around the World. I have no ideas what the number of R3's produced is but I wouldn't mind betting it's less than 1% of the number of LC's.

at the tail end... in 1995... RD350R's were circa £4k. I did a deal and got one for £2750 including some accessories and a deal on gear at half price.
So for me it was a cheap bike, the mags had trashed it enough at that point (without reason really as we know) that sales were dead.

I read on a Japanese site that Yamaha factory around that time were selling the RD125LC for around 300 pounds.

Never bought a new one but back in the day a decent 350LC could be had for £250. I know, I bought a few, and had a few nicked too.

My first 350 was Terry Beckett tuned and had every imaginable extra on it, bought in 1984 for £750 at age 17. I remember it being a lot more expensive than most at the time. Turned out it only had a ‘tuned by Terry Beckett’ sticker and was actually done in a shed in Farnworth…. That one was never on the road, always in bits. The second was a 250, with 350 top end and allspeed pipes. Thrashed the spuds off it everywhere, often two up. Never missed a beat. That was £400 in 1986.
