My currently being built 4L1/YPVS is not yet registered in my name , its on a Q plate, which I have , tax ran out in 1994.
Somehow, retirement is rapidly approaching so need to look at streamlining future expenses.
Making enquiries about getting an age related plate I have received this advice
"I would do a VIN check and see what vin number its registered on as most never used the full vin, its its registered on just a few numbers of the vin i would apply for a NOVA and say its an import and register on a age related plate but if its registered on the fullk vin I think you will be stuck with a Q plate. Its almost impossible to get it off a Q once its registered."
Struggling to fid a VIN decoder that will cope with the old VIN format , 4L1-007nnn .
Anyone any suggestions ?
One obvious suggestion is to get a frame and V5 , which if I could find one I`d seriously consider, as I`m hoping to be running this bike till I`m 80 odd would make financial sense (man maths ?).
When I started this build the 40 year MOT / tax exemption didn`t exist.
"Frame With V5 Wanted" add may be appearing soon !
I wont be parting with the nicely coated Q plate frame and V5 unless I`m really sure it won`t be used to ring someone else's pride and joy, having had my first LC and my last GSXR stolen.

I can't help with the process unfortunately, but I can offer a glimmer of hope. My 430e that I bought in 85 was on a Q reg. Sold it to a mate, who sold it to his brother, and whilst he had it he got Dvla to re reg it on an S reg. Weird, cos it was a 79/80 bike, so should have been a V or W reg, but it was all done by Dvla, with correct paperwork and log book, so you may get lucky if you refuse to give up !! He said he had to jump through hoops, but got it done. I always thought they would never re reg a Q, but that proved it does/did happen.

I too thought you could never remove a Q once it was done
Years ago it was a bit more lax but now with the workers in dvla that don't care and the computer says no attitude I think you will struggle
Lots were registered with either an extra 0 or a 0 missing so that bit of what you have been told I understand
The bit about registering as an import where it all falls down is the latest NOVA process
It has to be started before it is in the country and needs the shipping company details
Think it has to go through an agent as well so the days of fudging a NOVA on the Gov Gateway site are gone
To me you have 2 choices. Find a frame without a Q (import or UK) or just use the Q plate frame

I would use the Q plate frame "as is" If you are keeping the bike, it won't matter as any potential sale value won't come into it. Just make sure you can get insurance easily enough. It was always a pain on mine. Other issue is finding a replacement frame with v5 at a sensible price. Bike prices are stagnant, but prices of certain parts, if you can find them, seem to keep climbing

Something a bit nostalgic about a Q plate LC
Never mind the as original all matching minter
A "proper" LC on a Q that was thrashed, stolen, recovered, rebuilt, blown up and motor swapped
Is that not what really happened?

Im with Steve. Some of these things we disliked in the past are now part of the history and should be preserved. If i had a Q plate LC I would keep it as such.
But then, Im not about what things are worth, im about nostalgia and history and i think Q plate has its place now finally.
