I have recently noticed that my speedo needle has started to 'wave' when going above about 40mph, it was stable until quite recently. I have checked and greased the speedo cable, which seemed to help for a few miles, then it went back to 'waving' across a 10mph range.
Is this just age and I'll have to live with it? Is there a fix to stop this happening? Or does it indicate an impending issue with the speedo?
Your thoughts please...

My rev counter used to do that until I fitted a new cable

As above. Opening and cleaning and servicing the speedo may help, but once the internal spring is worn or the damper is shot then it's a case of replacing the internal mechanism. With another. It's something I do regular for people if you need it doing. Check the cable first though.

Update I fitted the new cable and this reduced the 'wavyness' from a 10 - 15mph range to a 5 - 10mph range. A couple of other 2T riders suggested stripping and cleaning the drive unit, which may help to improve its operation. I did this and just wanted to check 3 points with the knowledgeable people on here 1) the parts inside the drive are all present and correct? (I have had some previous parts that weren't) IMG20230605171144 2) should I pack it full with grease on reassembly, how much grease should there be in the drive unit? IMG20230605171205 3) does the ferrule part of the cable go in the drive end or the speedo head end? IMG20230605171540

Also replace the drive tab washer …has two prongs protruding.
These can wear/bend and cause the same issue, only a few quid to replace…

Yes, the drive washer is behind the seal on the left side of the front wheel.

The ferrule part goes by the speedo. If you do it the other way when you undo the cable at the wheel the inner slides out when youre not looking and lays in the dirt...
It should have a tiny washer as well to run on under it (ie inside the cable).

Dont overfill with grease, we used to pack these on dirt bikes to keep water out but you dont need to do that on a roadie, all that does is add drag. just grease it normally.
