Hi there , I’m just assembling an old 4LO engine and while the clutch basket looked good with minimal scoring on the basket edges etc I have noticed now that it is meshed with the crank and gearbox that there is about 3-4mm L-R play in the basket while the clutch gear remains stationary . Having not tried this on other builds, my questions is , is this excessive movement ? Does it mean the Damping Rubbers are shot or something else ? Thanks in advance Jonny

Bare will tell you it was designed to have 4-6mm play. rdlccrazy.proboards.com/post/366370But that can’t be right if your worn one only has 3-4mm. The truth is in between I think they were designed with a little play, but not 4-6mm. I wouldn’t say yours was too excessive. Interestingly the replacement rubber leave no play at all. Jon

Hi Jon, many thanks for your reply . I’ve looked at mine again and axial Movement is about 4-5mm so delighted and reassured by this and that I don’t have to pull the basket off the gear plate and replace the rubbers with the modern and less effective rubbers. Cheers ,

I think you meant to say radial movement, or else you've got big problems!

I have a similar play in mine & I plan to replace the whole clutch unit with a better quality jobbie.
Best get it running first!

Unless your Hobby is spending $ and skinning your Knuckles ? It is for many :-) Don't fix, what in all probability Doesn't Need 'fixin' or 'better' quality
