A friend let me use her Netflix password as I really wanted to see this. I have watched the original and the later film with Ernest Borgnine. Both of those films showed the reality of war but also the 'gentler' side. This film was different. It showed the true horrors of the Great War. 17 million died. About the same injured. And in 4 years the front line moved about 100 metres. I urge you to see this, just to remind you of the futility of war, so many wasted lives. And yet even in our PC 'enlightened' age this kind of thing carries on, mainly to satisfy the lunacy of one man.

I remember reading the book for English at school, sobering stuff.

Watched it as soon as it came out, I’ve watched the two others previously it’s impact is stunning, sadly we still don’t learn, here we are over 100 years later and another totalitarian t**t has brought war to Europe again.

It's a brilliant film, and a worthy adaptation of the book. Me and my lad watched it on the day it came out on Netflix and were blown away by just how good it is. Thankfully no Hollywood bulls$it ruining the story. Better than 1917 by a country mile in my book, though that is a great film too. And there is a great back story to this film. The screenplay for this version was co written by Lesley Paterson, a Scottish Triathlete, who had studied the book at school. She managed to acquire film rights to the book in 2006, and then struggled for many years to get it made into a film. She had to renew the rights every year, at great personal cost, even re mortgaging her house to fund it. It won 7 Baftas recently, including Best Screenplay, and was nominated for 9 Oscars. Wikipedia has lots of info, and she was interviewed on BBC breakfast a few weeks back where I first heard her amazing story Dusty

I saw the tail end of her story on the BBC news to the other week. She entered a triathlon in S America needing to win to get the prize money to fund her project. Only problem was she broke her collarbone the day before the event but still entered and won. True grit 👍🏻

I ordered the book and have finished it now. Superbly written and based on the writer's (Remarque) experiences in the trenches during WW1. So impressed I have now ordered The Way Back, a sequel to the original book.

Watch it in German with English subtitles is best I've watched a few films with and without sub titles and enjoyed the sub titled one best. Maybe partly because of my dodgy hearing . It means I don't miss any of the dialogue. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo was much better than the Daniel Craig English language version I thought.
