Is it possible to have the drum liner replaced on the standard LC rear wheel ?? I just found a hairline crack in mine while fitting new brake shoes

It is theoretically possible, but probably cheaper and quicker to get another wheel.

There was a chap who advertised in one of the bike mags about replacing a drum liner in a wheel .Its been a long time but it would either be CMM or Practical Sports bikes.

Had exactly the same a few years ago can’t remember the exact cost but as Rob says it was definitely cheaper to get an undamaged wheel.

Its allways the 350 ones that do this far less on the 250lc dont know why . Ive never come accross any o ne that does this but i bet some one out there must

Thanks lads . I'm wondering how easy it is to find a decent second hand 40yr old wheel and what it might cost . I'd imagine they're pretty thin on the ground . Has anyone got this bloke's phone number ??

Apart from filling the bearing full of swarf, I reckon that's not a bad job of prolonging the life of a worn out wheel.

Am I the only one thinking it should have been such a tight fit that it should need a press?
And never mind the swarf in the bearing, what about leaving the cush rubbers in while heating it 😬

I had the rear drum liner crack on my old CB400F (Spoke type wheel) It can be replaced but it also allot of hard work so I can fully understand why it’s so expensive. As you first need to bore out the old cracked liner (that was cast in originally) then you had to find a car drum brake that was about the right dimensions so you could machine up a one off liner that then was a shrink fit into your bored out hub And then after fitting you still needed to pin the liner to the hub it to stop it possible rotating in the wheel hub under heavy braking, as like I said originally the wheel hub was cast around the liner so very secure. So for me it was easier to just modify the original drum brake hub to accept to a disc brake set up Lastly just for info on the Honda forum a guy called Paul Jackson (an engineer based in Huddersfield) has replaced some cracked liners on old Hondas but not sure if he is still about but maybe worth a Google using his name and location? Best wishes Alan . I'd gladly pay the price. CMSNL list a wheel for 700 and odd euro , but they dont have any . And I thought crankshafts were expensive !!

Presumably it must be a left handed thread to ‘tighten’ itself against the rotational force of the wheel when the brake is applied.
