Hi all, we're off to Turkey in May, (first time).
Now, looking at a few things I see that neither of us have a deal that covers mobile roaming in Turkey. The phones will work, but the cheapest one would work out at a staggering £200 per Gb.
Just wondered how anyone else has dealt with this issue?
Cheers.

Not in Turkey Gary but I usually pick up a local SIM when I travel abroad. Lebara etc. and swap it over. Need your phone unlocked ie not tied to a single carrier first then see what local cards are available. Cheap for calls and lots of internet use Quick search on the net will identify good SIM for Turkey.

I never thought of that, I'll look into it. Both phones are sim free anyway out of the box.
Thanks.

We went to Turkey (Bodrum) for a week a couple of Septembers ago.
The plan was to get a local sim but they weren’t that cheap so we just made like teenagers and used the free Wi-Fi in the hotel / bar / restaurant/ shop or wherever we were to connect. It worked out fine and was quite refreshing not to be a slave to the bloody things for a week.
First tip - if you need your phone for navigation just download the areas you need from google maps and it works brilliantly, the only thing you don’t get is real-time traffic reports. Used this in Cape Province SA a few weeks back - did 1200km no dramas.
Second tip: Be sure to switch your mobile data / roaming off and set a safety limit of say £20 to prevent inadvertent bill shock

All the bars and restaurants have free WiFi, they will happily give you the passwords. Hotel normally has free WiFi too...

It's a bit like Marmaris. You either love it or hate it. Alex

The two best pieces of advice are use local WIFI sometimes they have it but don't mention it. Or if you need to use your phone alot buy a local simcard. To buy a local sim card can be very easy or a right royal pain, depending on the countries rules. NEVER KEEP YOUR ROAMING SWITCHED ON. A work colleague ran up a bill of 5000 euros in Venezuela once in 4 weeks time.

We goto Marmaris twice a year, I`ve got a mini wifi box and just carry that about in Judes bag or my pocket, you can buy a tourist sim at the airport when you get there. 20 gig for about twenty quid. You can pick up the wifi boxes on amazon but I have an ee osprey 2 that i used to use at the caravan, bought an unlock code for £1 on ebay and it worked a treat, its also smaller than a packet of fags.

Just got back from Cuba and and we used hotel Wifi (even though slow compared to uk) and made calls via Whats App without issue, also do this in Spain so can't see why Turkey would be any different.
