Not everyone's cup of char as it ain't a bike...but this is Ken Stiles car from Le Mans in 1966...that he would have won if Henry Ford the second wasn't such a pompous fat arse... This is a detailed kit but easier than the Honda Dream...sort of. Firstly get the chassis sorted. Then the tub. This is the fiddly bit. Making the seat belts. This kit has wafer thin and tiny metal parts to do just this, after I had to cut the belts to size. Plonk them in the tub along with the little fire extinguisher. Then the dashboard. To highlight the little switches I first dabbed on a tiny bit of white acrylic. A steady hand is needed! Then add some colour. I use Sharpie pens for this. The decals are very awkward as they have to recess into the dials. There is a technique for this. These. Use the Set one to help slide the decals in and the Sol version to allow them to almost sink into place. This is unreal stuff. You can make decals fold around corners and over curves...like with an LC tank for example. Add steering wheel. And a trial fit of the body onto the chassis. Fits perfectly. Alex

Along with the C Type Jag, Ferrari 250 GTO, Bugatti Type 24 (I think) and the MK1 Escort I reckon the GT40 is beautiful.
Watched them up close racing @ Silverstone Classic & Le Mans Classic many times - spine tingling!
I look forward to the start up video already!!

GT40 is my all time favorite car. One day i may win the lottery and buy one. There was 4 at a local car show end of last year. I parked next to one on my 125 lc and asked the guy if he wanted to swap as his mrs was complaining about getting in it. Sadly he was having none of it so i kept the LC

Did I say Ken Stiles? DOH. I blame the lateness of the evening lol. Bit of a hero of mine, WW2 tank driver and he won just about every race going apart from Le Mans...but in my eyes he did win it. Front and rear suspension fitted tonight. I like this car so much I'm bidding on the huge 1/12th scale version! Alex

As an aside, if your into cars and racing, especially the GT40, there's a great book all about the ford/Ferrari rivalry around the duel at lemans. It's called "Go like hell" by AJ Baime I don't often reread books more than once, but I've kept this one and read it several times .

With the chassis all done the next (nervous) stage is painting the bodywork. Thankfully this kit comes with the body on it's own so no sprues to cut off. First coat went well! This is Ford Bermuda Blue. Alex

The next job was a bit tricky. Painting the headlight inserts and grills in black. Not really possible to mask them off and even if that worked, one little bit of overspray means painting the body again. So I had an idea (2nd one this year) and painted the edges in acrylic then wiped the edges with a wet wipe. Worked a treat! Also put the headlights in. Alex

Glass time. Not a fan of doing this at all. I used to mask off the edges of the glass parts and then spray the edges matt black...but this time I hand painted the edges with acrylic. The windscreen itself didn't get done but the surround did. An idea of what the rear glass looks like. Snazzy! To stick the windows in never use modelling cement. It turns the glass opaque. I use crappy wood glue as it goes clear when dry. I use a matchstick to apply the glue, you only need a little bit but it does take a few hours to dry. Alex

Got my copy yesterday. It's fascinating and written almost like a novel...even though it's all fact. Worth every penny. But back to the car. Decals time. After fitting the windscreen the hardest job are the orange ones that go around the headlights, then mould around the wings plus they recess into 2 vents. Not easy. Took an hour for each one using Micro Sol to allow the decals to soften and sink into the bodywork. Worth the time to get it right though! And then some more...this pic is before the decal has formed and set properly on the roof. Alex

Decals all done! I had to put the rear window in and then the ram air scoops. Getting that #1 decal over the scoop was tricky and maybe impossible without some Micro Sol. Next job is to fit the body to the chassis without damaging anything! Alex

Cheers Dusty. Just noticed the light covers aren't on properly. Easily solved, it's only wood glue holding them in place. Apart from that I'm really pleased with it. Not sure what to do next...

My fingers are far to dangerous to build kits like this , plus lack of patience, looking good though, and the ones set in a scene , like a garage or pit lane look epic.
