P1030602 by Martin Mason, on Flickr Despite what many may say this was the bike that really destroyed British bikes from the early 60's on. 12V, 2LS front and rear, electric start, 180deg crank, lightweight, etc. Faster than the 500twins and all but a few of the 650's. It had a few faults which were accepted due to the superb package that it was. Poor charging at low revs, snatchy transmission at low speed, terrible ratios in the 4 speed gearbox, it needed another gear, as the camshaft wore it was difficult to set the points accurately as both sets of points were driven from the camshaft and, as it turned out, it was a bit slow compared with the incredible 2Ts still to come like the Super 6 et al. The one you see above was bored out to 350cc and CB350 pistons fitted, large valves, Bosch electronic ignition on the crank, Boyer regulator rectifier for the charging, duplex primary drive with tensioner removed and a Nova 5-speed box. Absolutely superb for a 60 year old middleweight and still in original unrestored condition. I bought it on 1600 miles from the first owner. Probably a generation before most on this site but an icon for sure

Lovely bike these, my Dad ran one for years for travelling to and from work, when it eventually gave up he traded it against a C90 step through to travel to work.

That looks lovely. Weren't they nicknamed the Black Bomber or was that a different bike?

The Black Bomber was the CB450 twin.
