So this is the kit. Made by Aoshima in 1/12th scale. There are only a handful of model kit companies out there these days. Matchbox and Airfix are still out there for sale but they are not the best kits in the world. Revell (who everyone seems to have heard of) used to make dire stuff but nowadays it's very good indeed. The level 5 kits are highly detailed. Then you have the big players. Tamiya, Hasegawa and Aoshima. Like bikes, Jap is where it's at! Tamiya used to be the best but have been eclipsed by the other two. Avoid Heller as they are so bad it's amazing they bother making anything. So what's in the box? Lots! And a load of chrome/metal effect parts too. Comprehensive decals too. First job is the wheels. I studied pictures of the actual bikes and the picture on the box is exactly right so the wheels need no painting. Well, almost no painting. When you cut chrome parts off the sprue you will need to touch up some areas. You can see the edge is red...so a little bit of light sanding and I then use my chrome spray. Squirt a bit in the lid and carefully paint it on the edges. You don't have to paint the rims of the wheels as the tyres will hide the damage but the little dust caps need painting in black. Then glue the rims together. As these are chrome you need to sand the edges where the glue will go or it won't stick. A few clothes pegs keep it all together... Next step is to prime all the parts that need painting. I warm the can on the radiator first... And apply...outside! The dust goes everywhere. The box the parts come in are ideal for this. More to come tomorrow! Alex

Nice job Alex this will come in handy when I do my models 😀👍 I remember making a big box to prime my warhammer outside when I did them.

Warhammer! That takes me back a while. When my then girlfriend was at Poly we had a shared house and two of the others there were really into that stuff. One of them made a Blood Angels (I think) tank and it was so crappy I said let me do it properly lol. So many figures and vehicles to choose from it's astounding. There used to be one of their shops in Staines I recall.

Yes it is quite astounding all the different figures you can get. I wasn't in to playing the game just getting the models. I used to get the Lizard men models still got some unopened sets in the loft. I will put some pics up Alex if you want in the model thread.
If anyone is interested on a bike forum 😁🤣

Awwww, I thought it was going to be a real one...... A fraction of the cost, gluing not bolting, but a build non the less. Makes perfect sense Plus all paint done "in house" and not sending stuff out for others to restore, then just bolting stuff together.....

A bit more progress. I actually had a days work today so not much time to get anything done. The wheels are done with the discs on too. I then moved onto the frame and swingarm. Always remove the parts to paint from the sprue or you'll have to paint them again. Never understood why people do that. I painted the frame gloss white first as I want the red coat to really 'zing' as it were... Then the really fiddly engine bits. The head and barrel need to be a more gunmetal grey so that got painted (just realised I didn't paint the head so I'll do that tomorrow!) These tiny little discs need to be glued into the head. Not easy. Then there was this part. 1mm if that. It's the oil filler cap and needs to be black, so... If I'd have dropped that... And the engine casings are assembled. They give you the correct lengths for all the little cables but I always cut them a tad longer just in case. More to come tomorrow! Alex

The frame etc is now in shiny red. However there are little parts on it that have to be painted in other colours. That's fiddly! The engine got some more work, head painted correctly and more bits bolted, sorry, glued on. The eagle eyed amongst you may have noticed the Blu Tac. It's ideal for holding parts in place for painting and gluing. The throttle linkage got built up too and connected to the carb. Next up was a trick bit. You can't paint over the chrome parts as it just flakes off. One option is to sand the chrome off but that's not always possible. So...mask off the chrome bits you want to stay chrome... I use 3M tape first then masking tape over the rest. Get some of this stuff... And soak the offending chrome parts for maybe a minute. Rinse off and hey presto.. The chrome has gone! Alex

fantastic tips!
Are you painting with spray or brush?

Thanks Jon.
I prefer to spray paint everything (including that little oil filler cap) but some things have to be done by hand. The chain adjuster bolts for one thing. Masking those off for spraying is nigh on impossible!

A few more bits done. The masking off can take a bit of time like this for example. But it's worth it to get it right. One thing I noticed from the start with this kit is it's clearly for the single exhaust version (the instructions are for this only) yet all the parts are there for twin zorst setup. So that's what I'm trying for! Also there are two tanks, a plain one and a brushed ally one. Two sets of clip ons as well. No idea why but there you go. The other part I managed to do was get these little buggers onto the exhaust outlets... Alex

I love how relaxed you are about the build I’m in the process of converting an rc30 to a joey IoM racer. All bolts replaced hoses, clear master cylinders, frame altered, brakes altered etc etc I’d not be able to replace all the hoses ht leads, put the frame together and fill it blah blah blah I’d imagine you’re having more fun Alex 😁

Also maybe we should do a separate hints/tips thread?

I think hints and tips should go in the "model kit corner" thread. As I find stuff on the net that's where I'm gonna post it so it keeps it together and concise Dusty

Wilco Skip. I'll pop up all the ones I know when I've finished this bike as pics help.
Yes Tim, this is fun. I am doing this as bog standard as she's pretty trick to begin with. However I am having issues trying to use the twin exhaust set up. Had to change the carb for one thing so no dual action twist grip. I did some more bits today and I'll get some photos tomorrow in the daylight.

Some more bits done. Painting the fork seals was tricky as they are about a fag paper in width. Another thing is painting the various nuts and bolts. Sometimes a pen will do it. Always good to have a selection. And the engine is in the frame. Well, half of the frame! Alex

Lads (and lasses) I know some of you want to see more of this but I've lost my mojo with it. Some of the parts are microscopic and for the first time ever I'm actually getting a headache trying to paint/fit them. So for the mo I'm working on the GT40 (no small parts) and I'll get back on this later on, and stock up on Paracetamol.

Completely get it Alex, I’ve just started a rd50lc yes 50, I’m doing it as a weekend build which I haven’t done for years just to do it and finish it rather than start super detailing it.

Cheers Tim. I will finish this, just not right now. The GT40 is the Ken Stiles car and I want to do this right. Perhaps a new build thread...
