I do get asylum seekers who have genuinely good reason to leave their country, but I don’t get the level of support we hand out to them. Serious question - did they not have to work for a living in their country of origin? Why should coming here be any different?

Having had first hand experience of coming in to contact with lots of asylum seekers, migrants and economic migrants, the narrative behind their choice to move can be complex. You have those who are genuinely at risk of harm, or see how unstable their countries have become. This can be down to rise of various factors. Religious extremism, greed from unelected’leaders’ instability caused by the wests intervention etc etc Then you have those that are purely out for economic gain and a whole variety of reasons. We in the Uk have decided that the majority of the former are not free to work, have no right to work or gain employment. This is totally different to the majority of European countries who will allow them to work whilst being processed. So often then they have no other recourse than to rely upon the state to provide. This is then used by various individuals and institutions to be able to be able to post headlines along the lines of grrr migrants. When in actual fact these same institutions are causing the problem. Then you get the take of ‘they come here stealing our jobs’ either they are working or they aren’t you can’t have it both ways. You also need to account for the reasons why they are here, as above. Now if I or my family were facing threats, or the country was facing civil war I’d get out as well. We also need to remember that English is the most commonly spoken second language that can be down historically the influence of the British empire then the rise of the USA in the past 100 years so why would you try to live somewhere where you couldn’t communicate. The other thing to consider is the difference between our approach to ‘foreigners’ if they look like us we as a nation are far more amenable to them, so Ukrainian refugees not a problem they are white Europeans with a similar religious background, however Afghanistan refugees aren’t like ‘us’ and have a different religious belief system and worship their god and this is a religion that has been demonised in the west. Unfortunately headlines from the majority of the right wing media will perpetuate these myths. This then feeds into the narrative and echo chamber that some people wish to grasp on to. The other consideration is that we are a b*****d nation formed on and created in migration no one is truly who they believe they are, we are a mish mash of ethnicities and racial backgrounds but of course xenophobes don’t ever wish to believe they couldn’t possibly be just ‘English’ whatever that is? I’d suggest reading ‘prisoners of geography’ a geopolitical take on identity, inglorious empire what the British did to India, black and British a forgotten history and Jews don’t count. They all give a historical take on Great Britain and show the journey of how and why we are here. You may not agree to the conclusions but at least you’ll have opened your eyes to a different take.

IMO the people who moan ‘they’ are taking our jobs are probably not willing to do the jobs and earn the meagre wages some immigrants work for.
I know someone who has a 19 year old son without a job. He mentioned he wouldn’t take a job for less than the average wage of £30k. Bearing in mind he hasn’t even passed his English exam, I think he’d be lucky?

Well....they certainly found the "asylum" haven't they! But you cant have an opinion on this subject because the 77th brigade will report you to big brother....no matter what you've seen and experienced... Those that are genuine, like those who worked for the invading forces of their countries SHOULD be given protection. Meanwhile people here are struggling with the cost of living, unlike those who have fled the war in France who originate from a country that wants to join NATO who are in free hotels with everything taken care of including dental bills... Yes they are in the asylum. And yes...it's grim up north..... And being moved to...Yorkshire.... Well that' just cruel....
