The nice people of Newcastle council are introducing the clean air charge this month to ride through the central motorway and around the city, here on Tyneside. So I checked to see what I’d have to pay and fortunately the little stokers I have are exempt. Which was rather pleasing to find out.
But it got me thinking where else would I be able to go on the bikes to avoid the tax. I had a look at Mr Khans plans for that there London and was rather pissed to read that anywhere within the North and South Circular you have to pay a daily charge for basically anything less than Euro Cat 5 if my memory serves me right. With that in mind I’d imagine they are a lot of 2 stroke owners canny pissed at having a new charge imposed on them just to take the bike out on sunny days ? What’s the feeling down there is there any dispensation or discount or is everyone having to take one for the team ?

Time for demos and civil unrest.... but it wont happen. The good citizens will do as they are told and take it up their arse's this time instead of their arms. Clean air charges what a fookin joke! Are they pursuing the terrorists that blew up the pipeline releasing that massive amount of greenhouse gas?

I live in North Surrey. If I drive 300 yards up the A30, I cross into a London Borough. When the ULEZ expands in August, crossing that imaginary line is gonna cost me 15 quid in my Ford Connect van🤬 Now my van is 2012, virtually mint and only done 50000 miles. The value is gonna plummet overnight as its not compliant, and I don't jave the money for a newer Euro 6 van, which needs to be at least 2016 or newer. Good news is I rarely go into a London Borough in my van, bad news is Khan wants to extend to everywhere inside the M25, meaning I would pay 15 quid just getting off my driveway !! Don't think there is any scheme for me, and even if there wad, I am not in the market for a newer van - I look after it so it lasts ! The joke is I can count the aircraft in and out of Heathrow every 90 seconds🙄

Every time i drive up or down the M1 past Sheffield, they drop the speed limit to 60mph "for air quality" it hacks me off, there's a steel plant on one side and a new bio-mass power station on the other! It's all a scam in my opinion, Steve is right we just take it up the ar*e. Andy.

how can it be clean air, how do they stop the wind changing direction and blowing all of that "dirty air" from the M25 into central London and thereby displacing all of that lovely clean air they reckon they are getting ?, also, how do they stop all of the "dirty air" from the aeroplanes and the trains that run over, iin/out and around London and other places? - its all a f**king scam to get more money out of the motorist, that's all it is

I shat myself there for a minute as hadn't heard about Newcastle where I have to go about once a month Went and had a look and apparently private cars and motorcycles are excempt 😅 Steve

Just to answer the op question. A lot of us 2 strokes around my way in south London are historic. So exempt from the ULEZ charge. And because 2 strokes don’t produce enough nox anyway they’d pass the test down here. Assuming your not historic and want to pay a one off fee of £175?

Clean air = restricted travel. It won’t be long until we are charged for leaving our front door.

Lora's exempt. So will Elsie be when she finally gets going. However my 1.0L Yaris with nigh on zero emissions isn't. Mad.
I read Dusty's post and got a little worried too. How far is this ULEZ thing going to stretch? I think after a while people are just going to say enough is enough and there will be protests. A lot of people will refuse to pay...but this might be what the government want, don't pay, fines, impound car etc and by doing that there are less vehicles around. I'd like to see them try doing this on aircraft...

Birmingham have had a clean air zone for a while now , mainly for the city center, so keep to the outer ring road, and don't venture in, and you won't get charged. But pretty sure when funds are needed, that'll expand. But I live on the far edge of Brum, with lots of nice countryside heading towards Worcester, Evesham and Wales, so never need to go anywhere where I'll be charged , and no intention of adding to their fund.
If I go into Brum it's on the train, which for the amount of thick black diesel smog it pumps out, I find ironic for a clean air zone.

Regarding Newcastle the charges are free for private cars & bikes FOR NOW! council have said they will monitor air quality so if it doesn't improve we're all going to be charged.
