Hi chaps I had a go on a 250lc today ;D after not really being on a bike for 15 years anyway it is pretty standard, owned for 15 years bit tatty but seems basicly sound in that it starts and stops when it should and goes well. The only thing that puts me off is the 30k mileage and the lump out of the crankcase where the chain came off. I dont know a n awful lot about bikes as I have forgotten most of what i did know, Just looking for some feedback ie what to look out for. Cheers.

looks like a tidy bike to me the engine casing brake is nothing to worry about very common on these tank is repairable its also one of the last 4l1 s being an 85 id say £1500-£2000 but in a recession may go a bit cheaper

Hi Wiggy that sounds like an accurate estimate cheers.
Do you know if the casing is repairable?
Is buying a 4L1 very much 2nd best, should I hold out for a 4L0.

Hi Wiggy that sounds like an accurate estimate cheers. Do you know if the casing is repairable? Is buying a 4L1 very much 2nd best, should I hold out for a 4L0. 4L0 is more desirable but never had a 250, but have been told that they are a handy tool too! You can put a 350 top end on at a later date but getting hold of a good 350 top end nowadays is getting very hard and expensive. Repairing crank case damage yes it's possible (I have a ypvs one that has been done) but does depend how severe. Whereabouts in Glos is it as I'm close?

Well I got it guys. £1350. I have a high adrenalin rush now and am not sure if that is excitement or post purchase anxiety anyway I hope you guys will help me out when I start asking dumbass questions. ;D I have waited 25 years for one of these ever since someone took me down the road on one at 14, He slipped the clutch in second.... and that moment was etched into my genes forever more...cheers.

I am hoping to restore it but the last time I took a bike apart it never went back together again My aim is to get it looking similar to Matt Pritty's which is in the LC gallery (well I can dream)! and imho is a thing of pure beauty. Before I let loose with the spanners though I will give it a good Blast...(adhering to national speed limits of course

Yes that is the first purchase. I was wondering how the heck I would find space in the garage...I had completely forgotten about the conservatory ;D

Yes from what I can see there have been 2 or 3 250s go this week for around this price. I have some budget left over to "tinker"but your advice sounds good. I dont want to be looking at a pile of bits come June.

Thanks for the link Gary. I am looking for the old style chrome Allspeeds, same as vin (above) has on his Mars bar, nice bike. Do Gibsons still do that style? It aint an RD unless it crackles.
